Young Israel Indorses Hebrew Corner
Religious School Aid The Route

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The Na-
tional Council of Young Israel,
central agency for a group of
Orthodox synagogues, today
joined the traditional Jewish or-
ganizations supporting Federal_
aid for religious schools. Such
aid is specifically excluded from
the Kennedy Administration
school/ aid bill now before the
Congress.
The Young Israel Council de-
clared in a resolution that the
movement "favors legal and con-

March

Thousands of years ago many peo-
ple on the festivals, Pesach and
Sukkot would go up to Jerusalem on
foot without using asses or horses;
this practice stopped with the de-
struction of the Temple. Today a
similar practice prevails in the State
of Israel—the route march.
The march began some years ago
in Israel. At the beginning only a
few participated but today thousands
participate. It is held before the
Passover festival, with the coming of
spring after the rainy season when
the roads and paths are dry and the
fields full of flowers.
The marchers are arranged in
groups: adults march for only two
days; youngsters march for three days
and the strong and healthy for four
days. They set out from a place near
Tel-Aviv and follow pathways lead-
ing to Jerusalem.
The army takes care of the march
and many soldiers take part in it
together with civilians.
On the last day of their walking
all the marchers reach Jerusalem and
the mayor welcomes them with joy
and clapping.

By BEN ISRAEL
All the world knows about the
visit of the Queen of Sheba to
Israel. King Solomon spread out
the royal carpet for the lady, who
had come from a far away land,
having heard of the great wis-
dom of King Solomon.
There are stories in the Tal-
mud that Solomon had a love
affair with her. Anyway, we know
that she was greatly impressed
by his wisdom and was loath to
depart as Israel was to see her
leave.

According to the archaeologist,
Dr. Nelson Glueck, the Queen of
Sheba's visit was more than a
personal one to sound out Solo-
mon's wisdom. He believes she
was interested in the copper of
King Solomon's mines and that
she and Solomon conclude
trade agreement. She will

Elath is buzzing with many
projects for the town's improve-

ment. The municipality has
started to develop an area of
sandy slopes, which school chil-
dren are clearing of rocks, as
the beginning of a long park
belt that is to stretch to the air
field.
The climate of Elath is much
like that of Arizona, _warm but
dry. It is a very easy place to
keep clean. There is the sea to
bathe and if you want to dry
your laundry, the sun will take
care of that. For those who want

First Jewish War
Memorial in Great
Britain Dedicated

LONDON, (JTA) — The first
Jewigh war memorial in this
country was unveiled and conse-
crated here in the garden in front
of the Willesden Jewish Ceme-
tery. Many leading civic and Jew-
ish community leaders, as well as
representatives of military and
diplomatic missions to Britain,
participated in the solemn cere-
monies.
Inspired by the Association of
Jewish Ex-Servicemen, the memo-
rial was erected by the Common-
wealth War Graves Commission,
and the design was approved by
the United Synagogue.
The memorial is dedicated to
the thousands of Jewish men and
women who lost their lives in the
two world wars and who have no
known resting place.
Field Marshal Sir Gerald Tem-
pler and Chief Rabbi Israel Bro-
die participated in the dedication
and consecration.
