Still another attack by Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion on
the Zionist movement, espe-
cially that of the United States,
has stirred up a hornet's nest
in American Jewish circles.
The Prime Minister resumed
his polemical assault in a vig-
orous defense before the Knes-
set, Israel's parliament, of his
recent joint statement with
Jacob Blaustein, honorary pres-
ident of the Ainerican Jewish
Committee, on relations be-
tween Israel and American
Jewry.
In the Knesset debate Ben-
Gurion insisted that Zionism
meant the centering of the
Jewish people in Israel and
that if the Zionist Organization
of America and others accepted
this but said that Zionism did
not impose a personal obliga-
tion to emigrate to Israel, "then
they say empty words."
The Prime Minister added
that he knew "of only one
Zionist in America I would
call a Zionist. And I will not
give his name. He does not
think of himself as an Ameri-
can. He thinks of himself only
as a Jew. He thinks these two
are different things, being an
American and being a Jew."
In a subsequent press confer-
ence in New York City, Dr.
Nahum Goldmann, president of
the World Zionist Organization,
denounced Ben-Gurion's attack,
declaring that the Prime Minis-
ter spoke "purely as an indi-
vidual," without the support of
his government or any major
party in Israel, including his
own.
D en yin g that Zionism had
ever demanded of its adherents
that they shoUld not regard
themselves as "full and .corn-
plete citizens of their coun-
tries," Goldmann declared that
he expected Ben-Gurion to
make more such statements in
the future. • Goldmann urged
Zionists to ignore them and to
avoid engaging in "fruitless,
meaningless and harmful de-
bate."
With regard to an implied
charge by Ben-Gurion that Gold-
man was delaying his planned
settlement in Israel until he was
assured of a Xabinet post, Gold-
iiian replied that he had said in
Israel_ that he c o u l d not
abruptly abandon his positions
in various Jewish organizations.
He added that he had never

"made any claims to special
posts."
In another response to Ben-
Gurion's statements, Rabbi Irv-
ing M i 11 e r, chairman of the
American Zionist Council, re-
jected the Prime Minister's
"attempt to define an American
and a Jew and the relationship
of one to another," declaring
that he preferred this view of
the late Justice Brandeis:
"There is no inconsistency
between loyalty to America
and loyalty to Jewry. The
Jewish spirit, the product of
our religion and experience,
is essentially m o de r n and
essentially American. Indeed,
loyalty to America demands
rather that each American
Jew become a Zionist. For

Israel Indicts Beer
on 8 Points As Spy
for Communist State

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Dr.
Israel Beer, Is r a e l i military
analyst arrested last month on
charges of acting as a spy for
a Communist c o u n t r y, was
served with an eight-point in-
dictment this week accusing
him of "handing over vital in-
formation to a foreign country,
with the intention of under-
mining the Stafe's• security."
Two clauses in the indictment
accuse Beer of violating the
Official Secrets Act, while six
other clauses charge him with
violating the State Security
Act. If convicted, he is liable
to get life imprisonment.
Beer, who held the rank of
lieutenant colonel retired in the
Israeli Army, was arrested at
his home in this city, on the
edge of a small park overlook-
ing the Yarkon River. Large
quantities of materials were
confiscated in his home. He was
accused by the police of having
made his last contact with the
Communist agent only a few
hours prior to his arrest.
Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion refused in the Knesset
(Parliament) to name the
country for which Beer had
spied. Demands by the right-
wing Herut Party that the diplo-
mat who was Beer's contact be
expelled as persona non grata
were answered by diplomatic
c i r c l e s who said that the
diplomat had already left Israel.

Other replies to Ben-Gurion
were issued by Max Bressler,
president of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America; the United
Zionist-Revisionists of America;
and the Bnai Zion.
"It is a matter of sincere regret
and distress that Mr. Ben-Gurion
for some inexplicable reason, per-
haps under the pressure of
heavy burdens of office, chose
to give vent to his hostility to
the degree of obsession by de-
