Gala - Shavitot Festival Bows In with Special Services This Weekend

Sabbath services this evening,
will usher in a weekend of festi-
vities in honor. of the holiday
of Shavuot, Saturday night
through Monday. All synagogues
in and around Detroit will hold
special services, and several are
planning Torah study programs.

A clasS of 56 boys and girls
will be graduated from the high
school department of TEMPLE
BETH EL 8:30 p.m. today. Dr.
Richard C. Hertz will deliver
the baccalaureate sermon on
"The Pursuit of Excellence."
At• 11:15 a.m. services Saturday,
Rabbi Harold D. Hahn will
preach on "The Ten Command-
ments Today." A class of 125
will be confirmed by. Dr. Hertz
and Rabbi Hahn at 9:45 a.m.
Shavuot services Sunday.
CONG. AHAVAS ACHIM will
install newly elected officers on
the second day of Shavuot, Mon-
day. Bar and Bas Mitzvahs will
receive JNF tree certificates at
services Sunday morning. Sab-
bath services will be held 7:30
p.m. today and 8:40 a.m. Satur-
day. The Bar Mitzvah of Alan
Moglovkin will be observed.
. "Tikun Shavuot," the
Jewish tradition of Torah
study throughout the first
night of Shavuot, will be ob-
served by YOUNG ISRAEL
OF GREENFIELD Saturday
evening. The synagogues to
remain open all night, classes
will be held and individual
study made possible for those
interested. Shavuot services
Will be held '7:30 p.m. Satur-
day and Sunday. At 9 a.m.
services Sunday, Rabbi Joshua
Sperka will speak on "Man,
Re-evaluated," and at 9 a.m.
services Monday, Rabbi Sper-
ka will discuss "Yizkor." Sab-
bath services tonight will be
held at 7:30. At 9 a.m. ser-
vices Saturday, Rabbi Sperka
will speak on "Approaching
Sinai."
Fifty-two graduates of the
TEMPLE ISRAEL High School
will receive their diplomas at
8 p.m. Sabbath services today.
Claude T. H. Friedmann and
Gary Stuart Gutterman will de-
liver the salutatory and valedic-
tory addresses. The largest
class in the history of Temple
Israel will receive the confirma-
tion blessing at 7:30 p.m. ser-
vices Saturday. A pageant on
"The 20th Anniversary of the
Founding of Temple Israel"
will.be presented by the entire
class of 125 boy and girls. Dr.
Leon Fram, founding rabbi of
the congrtgation, will deliver
the Confirmation sermon. Ad-
mission by ticket only. At 10:30
a.m. Shavuot services Sunday,
Yizkor prayers will be chanted.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme will de-
liver the sermon.
YOUNG ISRAEL OF NORTH-
WEST DETROIT will hold a
three-day study program in
honor of Shavuot. Sabbath serv-
ices are scheduled for 7:35
p.m. today and 9 a.m. Saturday
when Rabbi H. Prero will speak
on "The Holiday — Shavuot."
At 6:30 p.m. Saturday Rabbi
Isaac Paneth will lecture on
"The Ethics of the Fathers,"
and at 11:30 p.m. the study pro-
gram will begin under the di-
rection of Rabbis Paneth, Isaac
Kaplan and Morris Greenes. The
community is invited to parti-
cipate. Rabbi Prero will con-
duct a session prior to Sunday
services, and Rabbi Groinem
Lando of Yeshivat Hadarom will
lecture 6:30 p.m. Before 11 a.m.
Yizkor services Monday morn-
ing, Rabbi Prero will preach,
and at 6:30 p.m. Rabbi Chayim
Rabinovitz of Israel will lec-
ture on "The Tanach." Presi-
dent of Northwest Young Israel,
Rabbi Ernest Greenfield, will
preside at all sessions.

bath services will be held

7:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Sat-
urday. Rabbi Joel J. Litke will
preach on "Vitality Is Greater
Than Size." All Shavuot services
