Teacher in Italy Fined
for Textbook Criticism
FLORENCE, (JTA)—An
Italian-Jewish secondary school-
teacher was given a one-month
suspended sentence and fined
200,000 lire ($325) after she
was found guilty in a libel action
filed by the publishers of a text-
book she had charged was "apolo-
getic" 'toward fascism.
The schoolteacher, Ada Della-
tore, a former partisan and vic-
tim of fascist persecution during
the Second World War, had ad-
dressed a letter to the publisher
of a textbook used in her school,
complaining that the book sup-
plied a distorted interpretation
of fascism which might appear
to students as an apology for
dictatorship forbidden by post-
war Italian law. She also request-
ed a revision of the misleading

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Peretz
Naphtali, former.member of
Israel's Cabinet, a famous eco-
nomist and head of the German
Social Democratic party's eco-
nomic planning department
until the advent of the Hitler
regime, died here after a pro-
longed illness. He was 73. -
Naphtali came to Palestine
in 1933. He was elected to the
Tel Aviv Municipal Council in
1937; was a member of the ex-
ecutive committee of Histadrut,
the Israel Federation of Labor;
served as Minister of, Agricul-
ture from 1952 to 1955; and
became Minister without Port-
folio in 1955.
Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion eulogized the ex-Cabinet
member at the Government's
weekly Cabinet meeting. Naph-
tali's remains will be interred
in •the settlement of • Alumot,
on the shores of Lake Tiberias.

I. B. Bailin Dies
NEW YORK, (JTA) — I. B.
Bailin, Jewish educator, author
and journalist, died here at the
age of 77.
Born in Russia, he came to
the United States in 1911, and
became active as a writer in
the Yiddish and American
Socialist press. For a time, he
was director of the education
department of the Workmen's
Circle.
