Barcus, 65, who served with the Detroit Department of Reports and In- formation, died Wednesday in Henry Ford Hospital. He lived at 20231 Warrington. As a designer for the Albert Kahn architectural firm • from 1912 to 1930, he helped dpsign Shaarey Zedek Synagogue and Temple Beth El, besides the General Motors and Fisher Buildings, Dearborn Inn and Detroit Athletic Club. Architect, author, map maker, history enthusiast and artist, Barcus was graphic artist for the City Plan Commission for 18 years, and was with the city information department two years. His books included "Fresh- water Fury" and "All Around Detroit," both of which reflect his interest in historic Michi- gan. Another work, "May Day" is being. published. A graduate of Cass Technjcal High . School, University of Michigan, Beaux Arts Institute of Design in New York and the Chicago Art Institute, Mr. Bar- cus was a member of the Am erican Institute of Architects, Algonquin Historical Club, De- troit Historical Society and Jewish Historical Society. He leaves his wife, Esther; two daughters, Mrs. Harvey Cushman and Mrs. Donald War- ren; and two brothers, Norman and Harvey. • Moroccan Minister, Friendly to Jews, Dies RABAT, (JTA) — Embarek Bekkai, Morocco's Minister of the Interior, who had been a constant protector of Moroccan Jewry, died here. His death is consid- ered a hard blow to Moroccan Jewry which had been able to depend on -his benevolence and aid. The Minister, who was a French Army' officer when Morocco was a French colony, had given reassurance to Jewish organizations in other countries before Morocco obtained inde- pendence concerning his friendly attitude. Earlier this year, he was one of - a small group of Moroccan officials who interceded w _ith the late King Mohammed V to alle- viate a sudden worsening of the situation in the Moroccan- Jew- ish 'community touched off by the visit to Casablanca in Janu ary by President Nasser of -t United Arab Republic.
