A communication received from the mayor of Acre and co-signed by the secretary of the Labor Council expressed the municipal- ity's thanks and appreciation to the officers, sponsors and testi- monial committee members for their initiative in making this sorely needed institution possible. • "Our community," writes Mayor Joseph Gadish, "like so many others in Israel, has its growing pains. With courage, skill and devotion our citizenry is making great strides forward. And like all communities in Israel, its chief concern is its youth, the youngsters who must be taught to become productive workers and useful citizens. FOX (Copyright, 1961, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) It is traditional to recite the "Song of Songs" every Friday evening before the Sabbath prayers. Some claim this is done be- cause the Sabbath Eve Service welcomes the Sabbath as a bridegroom would welcome his bride. The "Song of Songs," being an expression of grea love, is a fitting Biblical text read before such an occas The general motive behind is ok reasoning is that one is t the forward to the approach Sabbath with great desir and anticipation for its many ss- ings and spiritual gifts. 0 rs (Zohar) claim that the of Songs" has 117 verses wh correspond to the 117 hour during the week in which the victims of Gehena are punished. Its recital is offered to spare those who utter it from this punishment. The total Of 117 is arrived at by asserting that our and one-half hours each y, the hours of prayer, are ose in which the victims of henna are at rest, leaving a lance of 117 hours in which ey are tortured. Still others laim (Midrash Hanealarn) that in the afternoon hours of every Friday the sanctity of the hu- man soul reveals itself in the spirit of .the Sabbath. One of the great sages was said to have discovered the deep meaning of the "Song of Songs" during this period. Thus it is recited since its meaning is not to be fully understood at any other time of the week (Shaloh). Six chapters of the Psalms are recited before the eve- ning service Friday. - The Kabbalist, Moshe Cordo- vero, is said to have recited these Psalms at that - occasion because he felt they repre- sented the six days of the week, as they speak the Majesty of the Almighty revealed in the works of the universe. Others claim that the Gaonim instituted this practice to correspond to the six blasts of the Shofar which were blown to announce the coming of the Sabbath. Gener- ally speaking, an introduction such as this was in order be- cause the service on the eve of the Sabbath was always moved up earlier in time in order to add more minutes to the Sab- bath from the week-day world. Consequently. it was felt in order to use these Psalms as an indication that the Majesty of the Almighty is to be found in the week-day world when one looks forward to the Sabbath.
