Passover Appeal
for WA Issued
by J. Meyerhoff

In an appeal to the Jews of
Detroit on the occasion of Pass-
over, in behalf of the United
Jewish Appeal, the major bene-
ficiary of Detroit's Allied Jewish
Campaign, Joseph Meyerhoff,
general chairman of the • UJA,
points to the added meaning
Passover assumes this year for
Jewry during the Israel Bar,
Mitzvah, Year.
"During this PassoVer season
we are conscious of-the fact that
we are celebrating not only the
ancient Exodus of our people
from bondage, but also the mod-
ern movement of Jewish refu-
gees towards freedom and a new
chance in life,". Meyerhoff said.
"For the United Jewish Ap-
peal, too, this is a meaningful
year. -The year 1961 has brought
us to a point where we at long
last can see the fruition of our
efforts of 22 years in the success
of Israel's people in building
their homeland and in the grad-
ual strength which has been ac-
cruing to Jewish communities
:elsewhere in the world which had
been shattered and weakened by
war and persecution.
"Passover is . a time not only
for rejoicing but a time for re-
,dedication as well. We must face
the fact that even 'though Israel
has made- outstanding progress,
the homelessness. and oppression
of Jews on the- worldwide -scale
is still very much a problem. .
• "At the present time the
United Jewish Appeal is dealing,
'largely with first-magnitude prob-
Jems of absorption and with con-
:tinued rehabilitation efforts in
countries outside of Israel, but
we must not forget that the
United Jewish Appeal must al
ways be prepared to _deal with
sudden emergencies as well.
"Therefore, the lesson we have
learned is that we cannot rest on
our laurels. During this Passover
season we must remind ourselves
'once more that ,liberty is won
only through determined effort,
sacrifice, and the continued exer-
cise of unity and dedication as a
community."
