Arab Students' Participation in Anti-Semitic Activities Scrutinized

By MILTON FRIEDMAN

WASHINGTON—Participation
of Arab students, foreign na-
tionals, in George Lincoln Rock-
well's "American Nazi Party"
activities and other anti-Semitism
has attracted attention of Con-
gressmen.
Facts are being gathered for
possible Congressional action.
The issue is whether the esti-
mated 5,000 Arab students, at-
tending hundreds of American
colleges and universities, are en-

tics as anti-Jewish agitators while
guests of America. Many of the
students are subsidized by the
U.S. Government and various
foundations established to pro-
mote international goodwill.

If American taxpayers are
indirectly financing Arab stu-
dents whose main "study" is
new approaches in anti-Jewish
propaganda, Congressmen
want to know about it.
A considerable proportion of
the Arab students, from na-
tions other than the United
Arab Republic, are legitimate
young people seeking to ad-
vance their education. But
some United Arab Republic
"students" are inure than 40
years old and are never seen
in classrooms.

ment providing for entry of many
Iraqi students in American col-
leges. The State Department saw
it as an opportunity to win the
Arabs' friendship for America.
But many of the Arab students,
dispatched by a "neutralist" gov-
ernment, were convinced Com-
munists coming to spread totali-
tarian propaganda here.
Ambassador John D. Jernegan,
who signed the new student ac-
cord for the United States, said
that "today, more than 1,000
Iraqis are studying in the United
States ... and we welcome them."
Significantly, the agreement was
signed for Iraq not by an edu-
cator or university president; it
was signed by a Brigadier Gen-

s u m m e r, Mostaf.a
el, UAR Ambassador to
United States, told the
nth annual convention of
Arab students, in Washington,
that it was their "duty" to work
against Jews and Israel. Kamel
charged that "a great part of
the public media of communi-
cations is controlled by the
Zionist minority." He said "the
Jewish minority" was "a bloc
. . . powerful, rich, influential,
fanatically sell-interested and
permanently against any un-
derstanding between Arabs
and Americans."
The State Department, fol-
lowing public protest, mildly
reprimanded the Ambassador
for intervening in domestic
American affairs.

Subsequently, the so - called
"Arab Information Center" in-
creased the flow of propaganda
mailings to Arab students. The
latest is a pamphlet entitled
"Exodus: A Distortion of Truth."
Instructions were given on the
line to be taken. It was that
Jewish "crimes" against Palestin-
ian Arabs were worse than any
"alleged" atrocities by Nazis
against Jews.
The organization of Arab stu-
dents chose to meet at Howard
University, a distinguished Negro
institution. Many Afro-Asian ex-
change students were invited as
guests. This most recent meeting,
in Washington, received greet-
ings from Nasser. Diatribes were
directed against "imperialism"
and "colonialism," linking Amer-
ica with the "imperialists" of
Western Europe.
When an "All African Stu-
dents Union" was created in
America, the Arab students,
financed by the UAR, gave par,
ties and sought to cultivate the
Africans. One African, sympa-
thetic to Israel, said he was
shocked that America permitted
such "Nazism" to be disseminated
here by foreign Arabs.
On his visit to the United Na-
tions General Assembly session
in New York last year, Nasser
took time from his busy schedule
of meeting with President Eisen-
hower and others to present a
large check to the Arab student
group here and to commend their
activities. The check covered
thousands of postage stamps to
convey letters to editors of
American dailies throughout the

nation. The letters inveighed
against Israel, Zionism, and the
U.S. citizens of Jewish faith.
They were written by the Arab
students whose main study ap-
peared to be the fomenting of
hate.
