a b r o a d. Moshe, who was
awarded a traveling scholarship
in 1957, chose Mexico.
A representational a r t is t,
Moshe felt that Mexico offered
him his best learning opportu-
nity, the more so because the
famous Mexican muralist, David
Siqueiros, had seen photographs
of his work and wanted Moshe
to work with him.
After three fruitful years in
that 'country 'Moshe and his
wife, Batia, his Israeli sweet-
heart who went to Mexico to
marry him, are in New York.
They plan to remain for a year
while he paints and exhibits
in this country. Some of his
works are currently on display
in the Tribune Gallery in New
York City and he has already
completed successful one-man
shows in Detroit and New Or-
leans.
When Moshe was 15, he be-
gan to study drawing at the
Municipal Studio in Haifa and
one year later, he was accepted
at the Bezalel School of Arts
and Crafts in Jerusalem; one of
the 40 cultural institutions in
Israel supported by the Ameri-
ca-Israel Cultural Foundation.
The young scholarship winner
decided to travel to the art cen-
ters of Europe and the United
States and study the great mas-
ters before going to Mexico.
From every standpoint, Mexi-
co turned out to be a fortunate
choice for Moshe. He painted
murals with Siqueiros, found
a rich source of material for
his own work and studied and
became exceedingly skilled in
the graphic arts.
It is probably characteristic
of Moshe that although he was
comfortable in Mexico where
he was acknowledged as one of
its leading artists, he decided
to pick up stakes and return to
Israel.
According to Moshe, Israel is
too young to have developed
either a traditional art or an
art tradition. Perhaps it is the
young artists like Moshe Gat
who can help build that tradi-
tion. One gets the feeling after
talking with Moshe that, some-
how, it will be accomplished—.
