"The earliest Christians worshiped
as Jews. They knew no other way of
worship. Jesus himself, brought up
in a Jewish home, lived within the
framework of the Jewish pattern.
The disciples, too, were presumably
all Jews. Thus . Temple worship,
along with the daily customs of
breaking bread (and possibly other
practices such as preaching, singing,
laying on of hands, reading Scrip-

"Characteristics of our Sun-
day," Ward concludes, "came
from Judaism, whether the phil-
osophy of the day did or did
not." The Christian "Day of the
Sun", he Writes, emerged as an
"antithesis to the Sabbath",
not as an approximation of it.
But Sunda,y, nevertheless, "be-
gan in Judaism".
The first blue laws, Ward
states, were passed by Constan-
tine I, the fourth century Ro-
man emperor converted to
Christianity. But while the per-
secution of the Jews under the
Romans has disappeared in
modern America, the blue laws
continue to act against them.
Ward urges the church to
side with "the minority against
inquisitory fiats" and suggests
that a prime purpose of the
blue law, to keep the family to-
gether on a rest clay, has failed.
Rather than tell individuals
what they can and cannot do,
the church would do well, he
claims, to educate youth in a
manner similar to the daily
Hebrew school.
Education at an early age, he
suggests, may avoid the situa-
tion discovered at one univer-
sity: A study revealed the
Fourth commandment, that deal-
ing with the sabbath, was re-
