Jewish Center Teen Cagers Lose
Danny Raskin's
in National .Championship Thriller

The Jewish Community Cen-
ter Teen Varsity Basketball
Team, midwestern JCC basket-
ball champions, defeated Newark
JCC (New Jersey champions),
69-53, in a consolation game of
the Jewish 'Welfare Board's na-
tional tournament at Boston last
weekend.
The Center lost to host team
Hecht House of Boston, 50-48,
in their opening game. The Teens
led 'throughout the game, losing
it on a jump shot with five sec-
onds to go.
In an all New York City final,
Williamsburg YMHA, Brooklyn,
beat JCH of Bensonhurst, Brook-
lyn, 71-69 in double overtime.
Other participants included Sche-
nectady (New York State cham-
pion), New Haven, Conn. (New
England champion) and Allen-

town, Pa. (Mid-Atlantic cham-
pion). The South and Far WeSt
did not send entries.
Billy Davis scored 28 in the
Center's opener and was voted
the tournament's good sportsman-
ship award. In. the consolation,
Jerry Golden and Ricky Landau
-were high, each with 17.
The Center's competitive swim
team defeated Detroit Boys
Club, 67-63 in 'their first swim
meet.
The Cyclones, Senior League
champions, who participated in
the Midwest JCC senior basket-
ball tournament at Cincinnati
this weekend, beat St. Louis JCC,
85-69, for the consolation bracke
championship after winning oN
Indianapolis by default. They lo
their opener to Louisville,
JCC, 113-54.

Ceremonies Mark Planting of 50
Millionth Tree in Israel by JNF

HAIFA, Israel—The 50-mi1-
lionth tree was planted here by
the Jewish National Fund on
Mount Carmel at an impressive
ceremony in which more than
a thousand persons participated,
including important go v ern -
ment officials and other prom-
inent personages from all parts
of the country.
President It zhak Ben-Zvi,
Premier D avid Ben-Gurion,
Speaker of the Knesset Kadish
Luz and Minister of Agricul-
ture. Moshe Dayan sent greet-
ings. Finance Minister Levi
Eshkol delivered an address in
which he emphasized the large-
scale afforestation program of
the Jewish National Fund and
its, broad significance for the
agricultural and security devel-
opment of the State of Israel.
