UAR Attacks President Kennedy
as 'Imperialist' for Loan to Israel

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
United Arab Republic, in a
broadcast monitored here, de-
nounced President Kennedy's
announcement of the new $25,-
000,000 Export-Import Bank loan
to Israel and said the Arab eco-
nomic warfare against Israel was
being • intensified.
The broadcast also announced
confiscation of Israeli cargoes
from two British ships at the
Port Said entrance to the Suez
Canal.
The UAR said that "Israel
goods" aboard the British
freighters "Chakdara" and "Clan
Malcolm" have been confiscated
and submitted to a prize court.
The Cairo radio added that "Arab
ports were also informed of the
names of these ships which are
to be blacklisted because of their
dealings with Israel."
A Cairo commentator said: "By
this action, Israel- wanted to feel
the pulse of the Arab authorities.
If it succeeded, it would begin
smuggling goods on a wide scale.
Israel resorted to this after it
became evident that it was im-
possible for it to pass through

the Arab canal and after it had
exhausted all political and mili-
tary_ maneuvers to attain its
ends."
Attacking President Kennedy
for announcing the recent loan
to Israel, the Cairo broadcast
said: "To Kennedy, all the
world's problems are of secon-
dary importance, whereas the
main problem, to which he gave
prominence in his statement is
that of Israel's economy and - the
millions of dollars of assistance
to it. This sympathy with Israel
shows Kennedy's imperialist pol-
icy."
The "Egyptian Home Service"
in an Arabic broadcast to the
Arab world, also denounced Ken-
nedy for aiding Israel and "pav-
ing the way for it to carry out
new aggressions." The broadcast
said: "The United States, which
is now defying the Arabs by ex-
tending aid to Israel, thus earn-
ing the enmity, wrath and hatred
of the Arabs with this open sup-
port of an enemy which harbors
nothing but evil against them,
will one day reap the fruits of
what it sows."

United Jewish Appeal Sets Cash

A nationwide effort to secure
$36,000,000 in cash funds by

Joseph Mey-

action was
taken "be-

I. D. Fink grams through-
out the world can go forward
only if maximum cash proceeds
be realized even while UJA
campaigns are in progress in

every community to raise our
national goal of $72,740,000 by
the end of the year."
Meyerhoff announced that
Cabinet member I. D. Fink, of
Minneapolis, would serve as
national chairman of the UJA's
cash drive, which • will begin
April 21 and run for 10 weeks.
Meyerhoff said the target
date for the cash drive will co-
incide with the annual midyear
UJA leadership conference to
be held in Israel June 13-14, as
part of the celebration of Is-
rael's 13th anniversary of inde-
pendence.

Borman Relates Israel's Progress Spurred by Bonds

Tom Borman, who is emerging
as the "top salesman" of Israel
Bonds, former 'chairman of the
Detroit Israel Bond Organization,
this week reviewed the progress
made in Israel with the aid of
Bonds, and urged that increased
efforts be exerted for the sale
of larger amounts of Bonds dur-
ing Israel's Bar Mitzvah year.
Borman reported in behalf of the
local organization:
"On the threshold of its Bar
Mitzvah year Israel stands within
reach of economic prosperity and
is the foremost example of suc-
cess among the many under-
developed nations which have
come into existence since World
War II. The celebration of its Bar
Mitzvah means that Israel is ready
to assume greater responsibilities
both at home and on the inter-
national scene.
"This year will mark the tenth
anniversary of the launching of
the Israel Bond program.
"Since 1951 the Israel Bond
drive has provided nearly $500,-
000,000 for the development of
every sector of Israel's economy.
"During the period from May
1, 1951, when the Israel Bond
campaign was inaugurated, to
March 31, 1960, a total of $116,-
100,000 in Israel Bonds proceeds
was allocated to agriculture. With
these funds Israel has moved
rapidly towards self-sufficiency in
food production with the result
that Israel now provides more
than 70 per cent of her food re-
quirements.
