The debate came to a head last November when Alpha Tau Omega asked for and obtained a waiver from its national office from a Caucasians only policy but refused a university request to ask for a similar waiver on a national policy of "Christians only." After weeks of argument, a senate committee on student af- fairs ruled on Jan. 20 that the fraternity's constitution did not contravene university policy. A subcommittee of the senate committee then began • a new study of the issue and scheduled, talks with the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith, the Urban League and the Governor's Corn- mission on Human Rights. Dr. Donald Zander, student activi- ties bureau director; said the subcommittee would present a report about April 7. The university policy forbid- ding any student group to deny membership on grounds of race, color or religion has one excep- tion, selection on purely religious grounds. The fraternity, how ever, has refused to be classi as a religious group. The resolution was adopted following a stormy debate in which speakers pointed out that it is an error to believe that a Jewish consistory similar to to that existing in Western countries can be a success in a country with a theocratic re- gime. Mubarek Bekkai, Moroc- can Minister of Interior- who presided at the opening of the congress, left the hall immedi- ately after the resolution was adopted, apparently dissatisfied with the resolution. The Jewish Community of Casablanca, largest in Morocco, did not participate in the con- gress, because it considered the internal political situation in Morocco inopportune for hold- ing such a congress. Three mem- bers of the executive of the Casablanca community who backed the holding of the con- gress resigned from leadership in the community.
