Located at 4262 W. Fort St., this impressive new home, in its completely-rebuilt four-story headquarters, serves the needs of older persons who have retired and seek companionship and an independent life. It is a home also for convales- cents who need non-hospital sur- roundings for recuperation. For chronically ill, the Ban- croft also has been recommended as one of the choicest and most inviting homes in the state. There are services at this home for cardiac cases, diabetic or hypersensitive people, men and women. The new convalescent home is so attractive, with so many invit- ing features, that a number of younger people who are convales- cing selected it for their homes. Charles G. Marion, New York hospital expert, has been chosen for the post of executive director of the Bancroft Convalescent Home because of his wide ex- perience in the hospital field. He invites those interested to call him, at TA 6-3200, and to ar- range to see the new convalescent home. WJ Congress Seeks Majdanek Witnesses A global search has been in- stituted by the World Jewish Congress in New York for survivors from the Majdanek concentration camp in Poland where 250,000 Jews were gassed and shot by the Nazis. The survivors are required to provide evidence against camp officials sought for prosecution by the West German author- ities. Majdanek, once a camp for Polish Jewish prisoners of war, was transformed into a concen- tration camp by the Germans for the Jews from the ghettos of Warsaw, Lublin and its sur- rounding areas. There were five sectors, each split into 24 bar- racks. Majdanek was the scene of one of the Nazis' most mon- strous acts. In one single 'day, November 3, 1943, 18,000 Jews were murdered. In all , about 250,000 victims died in the gas chambers and at the hands of. Nazi firing squads, and their bodies burned in'the crematoria of the camp. Former Majdanek internees are requested to contact Dr. Nehemiah Robinson, director, World Jewish Congress Insti- tute of Jewish Affairs, 15 E. 84th Street, New York 28. NEW YORK, (JTA) - Jewish behavior and opinions in the South before the Civil War were in "no appreciable way different from their non-Jewish neighbors," Dr. Bertram W. Korn, the histo- rian, told the 59th annual meet- ing of- the American Jewish His- torical Society here. Dr. Korn, who is president of the society, presented a study of southern Jewry during 1789 to 1865, at the opening session of the two-day conference, which was devoted to the Civil War cen- tennial observance. -;' Jews of the Old South func- tioned as part of the general so- cial pattern and close examina- tion of their role 'disclosed that "being Jewish did not play - any discernible role in the determina- tion of the relationship of Jews to slavery," Dr. Korn said. Middle East Peace WASHINGTON, (JTA) - The American Israel Public Affairs Committee called on the U.S. Government for "a sustained effort" to promote Arab-Israel peace and not be restrained by fear that working for peace will provoke Arab resentment. It stressed that peace can be ob- tained only by direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states. The committee's position was enunciated in a policy statement adopted at the conclusion of a conference here. It was sub- mitted to Lewis P. Stone, Assis- tant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Expressing • belief that • the American people "have been heartened by the courageous and vigorous leadership of President John F. Kennedy," the statement expressed hope that the Ad- ministration "will ensure a firm policy in the Near East which will deter aggression, promote peace and economic development and strengthen, freedom." The committee urged a firm commitment to resist aggression in the Near East, vigilance by America and its Western allies to ensure that the arms balance in the Near East is maintained, opposition to Arab boycotts and blockades and continued econo- mic aid to the peoples of the Near East.
