Maintains Mendelssohn Was Not 'Indifferent' to European Jews' Lot

Though biographies and pub-
lished letters conceal it, Felix
Mendelssohn, the great com-
poser, was 'anything but indif-
ferent to matters of European
Jewry," according to Dr. Eric
Werner, professor of music at
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion.
Editors of the Mendels-
sohn family papers "carefully
omitted all allusions which re-
mind the reader of the com-
poser's aristocratic Jewish
ancestors," Dr. Werner, eminent
musicologist and biographer of
Mendelssohn, writes in the
latest issue of the Bulletin of
the New York Public Library.
The professor's new biography
of Mendelssohn, based on
thousands of hitherto unpub-
lished letters and long sup-
pressed materials, is scheduled
for simultaneous publication in
Germany, England and the
United States.
His essay in the Library
Bulletin, coincides with an ex-
hibit at the New York Public
Library of 700- newly-acquired
Mendelssohn letters, to be on
view through Feb. 28.
Mendelssohn was the grand-
son of the celebrated Jewish
theologian and philosopher,
Moses Mendelssohn, and his
ancestors on both sides were

distinguished Jews, Dr. Werner
notes.
However, earlier publications
of his letters were altered;
names and incidents were sup-
pressed and misrepresented and
some entire sentences were
omitted to avoid reminding the
reader of his Jewish back-

ground, Dr. Werner explains.
The composer himself was
reared as a Christian and his
father, Abraham Mendelssohn,
adopted the name Bartholdy
and pleaded with his son to
accept it, holding that there
could not be a Christian named
Mendelssohn. Bu
