lommumimmi mu in Body of David Raziel, Irguu. Hero, Mrs. Max Kaplan Dies Mrs. Max (Sara)" Kaplan, 3263 Brought for Reburial in Israel Elmhurst, for many years active (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) TEL AVIV — The remains of David Raziel, first commander of the underground Irgun Zvai Leumi of the pre-state period, were brought to . Israel Wednes- day for reburial„ 21 years after Raziel's death on a special mis- sion for British Intelligence be- hind enemy lines in Iraq. The remains will be given a reburial with full honors in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl Thurs- day. Raziel ordered a truce in the Irgun's war on the British when Britain declared war on Nazi Germany, and was later asked by the British to use Irgun's "Black Squad" for sabotage behind the lines of Rashid Al-Ghaliani, a pro-. Axis rebel in Iraq. The Black Squad was made up of Arab- speaking Sephardic and Yemenite Jews for sabotage. Raziel led the first operation himself in 1940 and was killed. He was buried in the military cemetery at Ha- bania, the British RAF base out- ; side Baghdad, with the temporary rank of captain. His widow repeatedly asked the British for permission to transfer the remains to Palestine, but was consistently refused. In 1955, after intervention by British Commonwealth Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie, the British agreed to bring the remains to Cyprus, say- ing they had given a written promise to the Iraq Premier, Nuri Said, that the body would never be transferred to Israel. After the Republic of Cyprus was established, Menahem Beigin, the Irgun's last commander, sent a personal letter to Premier Ma- karios "as one undergrounder to another," asking permission to remove the body, which was granted.. A guard of honor stood by when the grave was opened and the coffin placed on a chartered plane to Israel. Because of fear of Arab reaction, the negotiations were kept secret until the plane landed in Tel Aviv and the re- mains were removed by a guard of honor from Betar, the youth arm of the Revisionist Zionists. The Herut Party, political suc- cessor to the Irgun, previously had asked the Israel Defense Ministry to permit reburial in the military cemetery with a guard of honor, and Prime Minis- ter and Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion agreed. in philanthropic and civic or- ganizations, died March 13.
