Mol os Hitim Campaign Most Vital This Year

With all the confidence we place in
our status as a secure economic group,
there is no doubt that the recession that
has set in has increased our responsi-
bilities towards the less fortunate among

US.

While we have many duties to per-
form - primarily those relating to the
Allied Jewish Campaign - there is an
immediate traditional appeal to us: that
of the Mo'os Hitim, the annual obligation
in this season of the year to provide
means for the needy in our midst to cele-
brate the approaching Passover festival
in accordance with established traditions.
The Mo'os Hitim tradition is one of
the most commendable of Jewish observ-

interest.
An interesting and very critical
introduction by F. R. Leavis adds
to the attention in the reprinted
paperback. Leavis is critical of
what he constantly refers to as
"the Zionist part" in the book.
Leavis quotes Henry James who
wrote in his criticism of Deronda:
"All the Jewish part is at bot-
tom cold." Leavis is critical about
Eliot's Deronda, and he states:
"She expanded herself on the
George Eliot
`Jewish question' because (partly,
at least) of a personal emotional need working in ways of
which she is not sufficiently aware, and in this the whole
Deronda function involved . ."
Nevertheless, the book remains historic in Jewish national-
ism. From the moment of its appearance, Jewish scholars
throughout the world judged "Deronda" as a great instrument
for reawakening interest in Jews, who were oppressed in many
lands, and the need for fulfillment of prophecy for their return
to Palestine. "Daniel Deronda" remains one of the creative
Zionist foundation documents. The new paperback may well

ances. It symbolizes our concern for those
in want and it admonishes us that when
we say, in reciting the Hagadah, that "all
who are hungry may come and share our
food," that we mean it, that it is not
mere lip service.
It is incumbent upon us, therefore,
to make certain that not a single Jewish
family should be deprived of means to
observe the Passover properly.
A call has been issued for increased
Mo'os Hitim funds. The need is greater
this year than ever, and our sharing
with the less affluent must be compar-
able to the need. Let the response to
the Mo'os Hitim appeal be more generous
become a best seller.
than ever before.
