a National Fraternity Ousts Stanford Danny Raskin's Iraq Denies Visas to World Famous ATO Chapter for Admitting Jews Personalities Who Visited Israel (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) to 0 E-4 CHICAGO—The High Council of Alpha Tau Omega announced Tuesday the ouster of its Stanford University chapter for pledging four Jewish students as members and for refusing to expel them as demanded by the national office. H. J. Garrecht, High Council chairman, said that the chapter's action had violated the fraternity's constitution which "requires alle- giance tq Christianity." He added that religious bias was not in- volved in the ouster decision, asserting that the fraternity had -members "of Hebrew origin" as well as clergymen of various de- nominations. "The constitution of our frater- nity was adopted by democratic action of all our chapters in 119 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada," the LISTENING chairman declared. "They deter- mine our membership policies." The Stanford University chap- ter took its, stand of refusing to expel the four Jewish pledges with the support of the university student council, Dr. William Craig, dean of men, and State Attorney General Stanley E. Mosk. Michael Kavanaugh, the chap- ter's president, reported in an- nouncing that the chapter would not bow to the national office ultimatum, that every one of the WATCHING DETROIT'S own 54 members of the chapter voted for admission of the Jewish stu- Mickey Woolf perform for the first time as a solo act brought dents. to bear a pertinent unanswered question . . .
