A bill pending in the Michi-
gan State Senate to prescribe
humane slaughter rules makes
reference. to Jewish traditional
rules and includes them among
the approved methods.
Senators Nichols and Greene
are the authors of "a bill to re-
quire humane methods of slaugh-
ter of livestock; to prescribe the
powers and duties of the director

.

of agriculture; and to /fix penal-
ties for violations."
Listing "methods of slaughter-
ing and handling found to be
humane," the bill includes. the
following clause:
"By slaughtering in accord-
ance with the ritual require-
ments of the Jewish faith or
any other religious faith that
prescribes a method of slaugh-
ter whereby the animal suffers
loss of consciousness by

anemia of the brain caused by
the simultaneous and instan-
taneous severance of the caro-
toid arteries with a sharp in-
strument."
Senator Charles Blondy stated
this week that, in his view, this
cause gives approval to Shehita,
the Jewish method of slaughter-
ing, and therefore avoids any
hurt that might otherwise have
come from a slaughtering bill
to the Jewish community.

Jewish.
Rabbi Jerome Chervin, of Con-
gregation Kesher Israel, the only
synagogue in West Chester, arose
when Dr. Toynbee reiterated his
charge and said it was his obliga-
tion to "clarify a few points of
history" for Dr. Toynbee and for
the record.
Rabbi Chervin said he would
not go so far as to call Prof.
Toynbee an out-and-out anti-
Semite, though he did cite state-
ments by Prof. William Albright
and Other intellectual leaders
who have asserted that Dr. Toyn-
bee has a definite negative atti-
tude toward Israel and Judaism.
The rabbi said the equation of
the "cold and calculated annihila-
tion" of the 6,000,000 European
Jews and the Israeli treatment of
the Arabs following the invasion
of Israel by the "Arab warlords"
was "utterly ridiculous." He also
said Dr. Toynbee "should open
his eyes to the fact that 150,000

Arabs w live in Israel as first
class itizens" and that Arabs
