Bishop Pike Declares Seeds. of Hatred Often Planted by Churches Bishop James A. Pike charges that the seeds of racial and religious hatred are often planted by the churches them- selves by "what they teach, what they fail to. teach, and what they are." Writing in the new issue of Look Magazine, Bishop Pike, the Episcopal Bishop of Cali- fornia, declared that many peo- ple responsible for acts of hate are church members. "The sad and shocking truth is that the roots of bias often reach babk to the pulpit and the Sunday School class," the bishop noted. He cited numerous examples from religious -text books cur- rently under study in which anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and anti-Protestant feelings can be aroused by exaggerated or mis- leading interpretations of the Bible and of history. Bishop Pike cited some distorted 'ac- counts of the role of the Jews in the crucifixion of Christ. Addressing himself then to the general problem of discrimi-- nation by church members, he said: "It is disgraceful that people are being barred from neighborhoods and clubs - on a baSis that would have barred Jesus Himself—due in strong measure to the influence of His own church. It is distressing that regular church members are agents of segregation. And it is shameful that the rift of the Reformation is being widened by some churches."
