Why do some Jews consider it a requirement to eat turkey on Purim? There seems to be no tradi- tional basis for this custom ex- cept for the fact that it repre. sents a kind of luxury which is necessarily displayed during a feast of celebration. Thus, on Purim when a feast is given to celebrate our ancient victory over the schemes of Haman, turkey would be in order. There are some writers who contend that turkey does represent something of special significance on Purim. For one thing, they claim it is eaten because of its Hebrew name which is "Tarnegol 1-lodu" (the fowl of India). Since India was one of the countries involve in the domain of Ahasueros w ruled "From Hodu to Ku (from India to Ethiopia), L- ing the "fowl of India" ld remind us of those ancient tories involved in the stor f Esther. Furthermore, it is claime that the turkey was somehow symbolic of a fool or of foolish- ness. Eating it would thus re- mind us of the King Ahasueros who was known as a "foolish king." * * Why do some traditionally eat peas and beans on Purim? I was told that you welcome questions so I came with a daring one." He stopped, apparently waiting for me to tell him to proceed. I did. "I have read attentively twice the biblical Book of Esther," he said, "and noted with surprise that it does not contain God's name even once! Is there another book in the Bible in which the Creator's name does not appear? Is not this omission proof that the Megillah (as the Book of Es- ther is termed) was not written by a Jew?"
