him into . a rebel at the age
of 13.
And we still will not have
closed the tremendous gap be-
tween that magical age of 13,
which unfortunately for many
signals an end to Jewish study,
and 'resumption of responsibili-
ties when the first child is born.
Our adult education classes
today are filled with young men
and women, many of whom had
extensive training at Jewish
schools up to the age of Bar
Mitivah. But during the inter-
vening years following Bar Mitz-
vah they felt freed from the
obligation to be observant or
to observe or even to study
things Jewish.
I feel very strongly that the
mere addition of pre-Bar Mitz-
vah requiremenst is no solution
per se. There must be new em-
phasis on post-Bar Mitzvah study
—study during the years when
a youngster will retain more of
what he learns, study that will
continue past the age of 13.
It is in this area that our
Jewish educators must find the
solution. Even more valuable
than the extra year prior to
Bar Mitzvah is the extra year
or two or three following it.

Editor, The Jewish News:
No one can quarrel with any
attempt to raise the standards
of Jewish education in our
schools and synagogues. How-
ever, to become too elated over
the recent pronouncement that
a minimum of five years of at-
tendance at a regular Hebrew
school be required for Bar Mitz-
vah on the Sabbath, I think, is
a mistake.
First, there is an obvious loop-
hole. The edict makes mention
only of Bar Mitzvah on the
Sabbath, which probably means
that a boy with six months of
Hebrew training will still be
able to qualify for Bar Mitzvah
on a week day.
Who wants Bar Mitzvah on a
week day? I would venture to
guess that it would be the same
people who believe in Bar Mitz-
vah ,only for the sake of Bar
Mitzvah and not for what it
supposedly represents — the be-
ginning of Jewish responsibility.
However, much more valid
than the above technicality, is
the basic issue of pre-Bar Mitz-
vah instruction as opposed to
post - Bar Mitzvah instruction.
Under the new edict, a boy
starts his Bar Mitzvah training
at age eight — a year earlier
-- but he is still through when
he is 13.
And while the schools have
him for an extra year, the ad-
ditional study will not make
him want to remain in Hebrew
school any more than today. In
fact, we may be even reverting
