Chafes' 20th Anniversary Concert
Proves Great Triumph for Musician
There was an ovation for a
great musician, at the 20th
anniversary concert of the Cen-
ter Symphony Orchestra, when
an overflow audience rose to
pay its respects to Julius Chajes,
organizer of the orchestra and
for 20 years the director of
music at the Jewish Community
Center.
In behalf of the Center, Sam-
uel Frankel paid a glowing tri-
bute to Chajes. The City of
Detroit officially joined in hon-
oring him. But it was primarily
the program—all the composi-
tions being by Chajes—that was
responsible for the jubilation.
The second portion of the
program, after the intermis-
sion and the greetings, was
devoted to Chajes' Piano Con-
certo in E. It was conducted
by Paul Paray, conductor of
the Detroit Symphony Orches-
tra, and the musicians joined
in the magic of the evening,
responding to Paray—as well
as to the numbers conducted
by Chajes — with dedication
and with an inspiration that
made the event a great holi-
day occasion.
Chajes, in the first portion
of the program, conducted the
orchestra in this group of his
compositions:
The 142nd Psalm, which fea-
tured the Central Woodward
Christian Church Choir and the
, Center Choral • Society, with
Deana Taylor, soprano, Cantor
Jacob Barkin, tenor, and Irving
Rosengard, baritone, as soloists;
By the Rivers of Babylon—
.the 137th Psalm — featuring
Cantor Barkin and a cello solo
by Arthur Bachmann;
Adarim — Israeli shepherd
song which has gained world
fame — also presenting Cantor
Barkin; and
The initial presentation in
Detroit of ChajeS' symphonic
poem, "Eros," which proved a
great favorite with the audi-
ence.
Marian Van Liew Lincoln was
the director of the participating
Central Woodward Christian
Church Choir.
Paray and Chajes were
called back again and again
by the enthusiastic audience,
after the performance of the
Piano Concerto in E. Chajes
composed it in 1949-52,
played it for the first time
with the Vienna Symphony
Orchestra, in Vienna, in 1952,
and in 1953 he appeared as
soloist with the Det

There was a capacity audi-
ence of 500 in the Center's
DeRoy Theater, and an over-
, flow audience of 700 more
heard and witnessed the fine
performance which was broad-
cast and televised into the ad-
, joining social hall.
The distinguished audience
'. Included many community
leaders of all faiths, repre-
sentatives of musical organ-
. izations, • members -of the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra
and conservatories.
Pioneer members of the Cen-
ter music committees were
there, and among them were
participants in the Center music
programs who assisted in or-
ganizing the department 20
years ago.
In attendance were pupils
of Mr. and Mrs. Chajes, many
of whom had distinguished
themselves as vocalists and
pianists, among them Betty
Kowalsky, who is now on the
music staff of Wayne State
University, and her husband,
Jerome Stassen, who was con-
certmaster of the Center Sym-
phony for several years; and
members of choirs which were
directed by Chajes.
The concert, dedicated to
Chajes, was, indeed, a musical
triumph for the noted musician.
