GRAFMAN The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Grafman, 1000 Merton, was recently cele- brated at a family dinner at the home of their daughter and son- in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Julius C. Pliskow. Among those in attendance were their two grandchildren, Daniel Pliskow and Mrs. Stephen M. Adler, and two great grand- children. The Grafmans were married in New York City and have lived in Detroit for 49 years. Navy Tips Cap to Mrs. Gitlin Local Navy authorities recently paid tribute to Mrs. Esther Gitlin for more than 20 years of volun- teer service to sailors, officers and enlisted men, and their fam- ilies in the Detroit area. Mrs. Gitlin, re-elected for the 8th time as vice president of the Detroit Women's Council Navy League, was given a luncheon and presented a plaque by Com- mander David W. Zimmer, in charge of naval recruiting here. The wife of Dr. Charles Git- lin, who served with the Army overseas in World War II, Mrs. Gitlin began her work immedi- ately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She established a - can- teen in the Federal Building, was active in bond and blood drives and found jobs for Navy depend- ents. She has helped Navy fam- ilies through many other prob- lems. Zimmer expressed the Navy's appreciation and commended Mrs. Gitlin for "a job well done." Slate Tu B'Sh vat Cohen-Selesny Appeals During Troth Announced JNF Month Since the proclamation by the Jewish National Fund of the month of Shvat (Jan. 18 to Feb. 16) as JNF Month, nearly every synagogue and all schools have undertaken to conduct • appeals for the planting of trees and other traditional aids to land reclamation in Israel. According to Morris J. Brand- wine, president of the. JNF, spe- cial attention is being paid by schools and synagogues to tree planting, since Hamisha Asar or Tu B'Shvat, will be observed on Wednesday. Tu B'Shvat, also known as Arbor Day in Israel or the New Year of the Trees, which began as a Palestinian holiday, is celebrated by Jews all over the world, symbolizing the -love of the Jewish people for the Holy Land. It has helped keep -alive the feeling for- trees and plants. In synagogues, appeals will be made for the planting of trees on Saturday, designated as JNF Sab- bath. The schools have this year undertaken to expand their an- nual Tu B'Shvat efforts. Many organizations are plan- ning JNF and Tu B'Shvat pro- grams. Trees can be planted by call- ing the JNF office, UN 4-2767. Certificates will be issued in the names of the persons in whose honor, or memory, trees have been planted.
