50th Anniversary

MR. AND MRS. GRAFMAN

The 50th wedding anniversary
of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Grafman,
1000 Merton, was recently cele-
brated at a family dinner at the
home of their daughter and son-
in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Julius C.
Pliskow.

Among those in attendance
were their two grandchildren,
Daniel Pliskow and Mrs. Stephen
M. Adler, and two great grand-

The Grafmans were married in
New York City and have lived

Navy Tips Cap
to Mrs. Gitlin

Local Navy authorities recently
paid tribute to Mrs. Esther Gitlin
for more than 20 years of volun-
teer service to sailors, officers
and enlisted men, and their fam-
ilies in the Detroit area.
Mrs. Gitlin, re-elected for the
8th time as vice president of the
Detroit Women's Council Navy
League, was given a luncheon
and presented a plaque by Com-
mander David W. Zimmer, in
charge of naval recruiting here.
The wife of Dr. Charles Git-
lin, who served with the Army
overseas in World War II, Mrs.
Gitlin began her work immedi-
ately after the attack on Pearl
Harbor. She established a - can-
teen in the Federal Building, was
active in bond and blood drives
and found jobs for Navy depend-
ents. She has helped Navy fam-
ilies through many other prob-
lems.
Zimmer expressed the Navy's
appreciation and commended
Mrs. Gitlin for "a job well
done."

Appeals During Troth Announced
JNF Month

Since the proclamation by the
Jewish National Fund of the
month of Shvat (Jan. 18 to Feb.
16) as JNF Month, nearly every
synagogue and all schools have
undertaken to conduct • appeals
for the planting of trees and
other traditional aids to land
reclamation in Israel.
According to Morris J. Brand-
wine, president of the. JNF, spe-
cial attention is being paid by
schools and synagogues to tree
planting, since Hamisha Asar or
Tu B'Shvat, will be observed
on Wednesday. Tu B'Shvat, also
known as Arbor Day in Israel or
the New Year of the Trees,
which began as a Palestinian
holiday, is celebrated by Jews all
over the world, symbolizing the
-love of the Jewish people for the
Holy Land. It has helped keep
-alive the feeling for- trees and
plants.
In synagogues, appeals will be
made for the planting of trees on
Saturday, designated as JNF Sab-
bath.
The schools have this year
undertaken to expand their an-
nual Tu B'Shvat efforts.
Many organizations are plan-
ning JNF and Tu B'Shvat pro-
grams.
Trees can be planted by call-
ing the JNF office, UN 4-2767.
Certificates will be issued in the
names of the persons in whose
honor, or memory, trees have
been planted.
