Regarding Preparation

for

BAR MITZVAH

1. "To make the Bar Mitzvah ceremony a truly significant occasion in the Jewish education of
our children and to make the Bar Mitzvah a truly meaningful initiation into their religious
obligations as responsible Jewish citizens of our community"
2. "To provide a more intensive grounding in Jewish knowledge, belief and observance for
our children"

3.

"To prepare our coming generation more adequately for rich and satisfying Jewish living
and for intelligent participation in the activities of our community"

4.

"To prepare our children for the pursuit of higher Jewish studies"

We, the following congregations, in cooperation with the United Hebrew School, the Yeshivah
Beth Yehudah, and the schools of the undersigned, have approved this requirement:

In order for a boy to be accepted for the observance of Bar Mitzvah on the Sabbath
in the undersigned Synagogues, he will henceforth be required to complete satisfactorily
A MINIMUM OF FIVE YEARS of attendance at a regular Hebrew School.

This means that, beginning with September, 1961, children will be required to start their
Hebrew schooling not later than the age of eight
