serve the best interests of
Detroit Jewry," Frankel said.

"1. There will be no change

all activities which are under

is now taking place will go
on as originally planned.

of activities now made avail-

existing specialty depart-

In a statement evaluating the
situation, Frankel pointed out:
"The decision to revise our
administrative structure to eli-
minate the present arts and
crafts, drama, music and adult
education departments, after
the first of June, was made in
consulation with our key pro-
fessional staff after a careful
appraisal of our present fi-
nancial position and prospects,
and of membership trends in
the agency. The original plan-
ning for our new building was

see the bodies which were at
the Alhucemas morgue and
the local rabbi waited for
three days before authorizing
burial. In Casablanca, Jews
wear gay clothes. No one
wants to be suspected of be-
ing a relative of any of the
43 victims.

Well-informed sources say
that 117 Moroccan Jews have
left Morocco "illegally" since
President Nasser of the United
Arab Republic arrived on Jan.
3 for the Afro-Arab "sum-
mit" conference. A wave of
panic swept the Jews of Mo-
rocco.
Now, more than ever before,
every Moroccan Jew is deter-
mined to escape. Nine months
ago, many wanted to leave for
economic or religious reasons
but dating from the time when
Morocco cut off postal ties with
Israel, every Moroccan Jew is
living in fear.
Panic has been further in-
creased by the police crack-
down launched on Nasser's ar-
rival. The authorities arrested
some 2,000 Jews, many of them
women and children, for wear-
ing blue sweaters and white
skirts and maltreated them at
police headquarters.
The Moroccan nationalist
press greeted the news of the
Pisces disaster with violent
anti-Jewish editorial s. One
newspaper declared that the
Jewish leaders who complained
to the Casablanca Governor
"should not be listened to. They
should be brought before com-
petent courts and charged with
sedition."

Greatly concerned with the welfare of our com-
munity, and the preservation of our sacred spiritual
values which are of such vital importance for it, the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis welcomes the decision
of local congregations to require a longer period of
Jewish education prior to Bar Mitzvah, as a step

in the right direction.

At the same time the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis, as spokesman for the orthodox Rabbinate
and congregations, considers it necessary to impress
upon parents that Jewish education is not merely a
matter of minimal requirements of years, or weekly
hours, in instruction. An adequate Jewish education
depends also on an adeq and adequate
goals.

implementation.
