Charge 'Educational
Standards' Utilized -
by Segregationists

Upper-income parents in New
York's "silk-stocking district"
bitterly attacked the Board of
Education's recent rezoning
efforts by using "educational
standards" as a blind for their
segregationist stand, it was re-
ported today.
Two residents of the area,
Bob and Phyllis Goldman, tell
the story of "Segregation: Park
Avenue Style" in the new issue
of Look Magazine. Mrs. Gold-
man is a former New York City
school teacher.
For years, children in the
"Silk Stocking District'k which
includes some of the highest-
priced town houses and apart-
ments in the world, had at-
tended Public School 6 which
was especially zoned to permit
a virtually all-white student
body.
Negro and Puerto Rican
youhgsters who lived in tene-
ments adjoining the wealthy
area attended other schools.
The fight began when the
Board of Education announced
that the district would be re-
zoned -in accordance with old
established, but neglected, regu-
lations, with some P.S. 6 stu-
dents transferred to a new
school, P. S. 198.

Medical Journal
Devotes Issue to
`Jewish Role'

The current issue of the semi-
anual Hebrew Medical Journal,
edited by Dr. Moses Einhorn of
New York, contains a number
of articles which stress the Jew-
ish role in medicine throughout
the ages.
Included also is an extensive
study dealing with the relation
between diets, serum and cho-
lesterol levels and heart disease
in patients with peptic ulcer,
written by doctors David J.
Sandweiss of Detroit, Marcus H.
Sugarman and Gilbert M.. Ber-
man.
The section "Medicine and
Religion" contains an historical
study by Rabbi Immanuel Ja-
kobovits on "The Dissection of
the Dead in Jewish Law." The
author reviews the literature
and examines the arguments
and practices relative to this
controversial subject in modern
times.
The Journal includes also 'an
article on "The Jewish Contri-
bution to Me di c i n e," by Dr.
Zussmann Muntner; "The Prob-
lem of Glaucoma," by Dr. Ben-
jamin L. Gordon; and "The
Versatility of Abraham Porta-
leone," by Dr. Noah Shapiro.
Portaleone was a Jewish
physician, author, linguist and
mineralogist in 16th century
Italy.
