Addressing a large gathering that filled the McGregor Memo- rial Hall of Wayne State Univer- sity, on Jan. 12, Dr. Samuel Sandmel, Provost of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, described the First Century of this era as the form- ative years for both Judaism and Christianity. - Describing the changes and metamorphoses, he pointed out that Rabbinic Judaism was cen- tered in -the Scriptures and in the Five Books of Moses. He outlined the legalism of rabbinic law as incorporated in the Mish- na and Gemarah. He emphasized that the oral law emerged as valuable as the written law. From Paul's standpoint, he added, the laws of Moses were inferior to the revelations in Christ, and from that viewpoint the - prohibitions • in. the law spurred one on to do what the law prohibited. Prof. S a ndm el explained that Paul's approach was that you can't get action by legisla- tion. For Judaism, Dr. Sandmel said, "conduct" is the hallmark, whereas for Christianity it is "faith." But the two religions, Dr. Sandmel said, emanate from a common matrix, both making important contributions to the preservation of man. The speaker was introduced by Philip Slomoyitz. The lecture was part of the Borman Semitics Lecture Series. Dr. Abram Spiro, head of the Near Eastern Department at Wayne State University, out- lined future plans for the lecture series in his opening remarks preceding the lecture. 8ng agetnents Since in De Hospitals EXCLUSIV IA TE.4•7355, Recommended by Physicians RABBI If0 GOLDMAN Dec. 9 — To _Dr. (Lull Sam .I. 6 jam.
