Joseph Leib, 87, Dies; Worked
with Herzl in Early Zionist Period

A life of service to the. Zionist
movement came to an end Tues-
day with the death of Joseph
Leib, 87, who worked with Dr.
Theodor Herzl during the birth
of Zionism,
Leib, who lived with his daugh-
ter and son-in-law, the Charles
Weiners of Vassar Dr., died in
Miami, Fla.
Born in Jassy, Romania May
29, 1873, the youngest of three
children, Leib was 22 years old
when he helped organize the Ro-

manian First Zionist Organiza-
tion in 1895, serving as its first
secretary. The organization, Tik-
vas Zion (Hope of. Zion), boasted
360 members, all of whom were
informed of weekly meetings by
postcards handwritten by Leib.
Theodor Herzl and Leib became
acquainted at this time.
Leib left Romania following a
pogrom in Jassy in May of 1899.
Arriving in the U.S. in 1901, he
headed for Green Bay, Wise.
where he lived for six months,
and then went to Chicago where
he set himself up in the building
industry.
