Bnai Brith President Katz Repudiates Prinz Proposal for Zionists' Liquidation (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) WASHINGTON. — Label A. Katz, international president of Bnai Brith, said Monday that "the various Zionist organiza tions have made and are still making an important contribution to Jewish - life everywhere." • • He said he thought it "ill-conceived, ill-considered and ill-timed. for anyone to advocate the dissolution of such organiza- tions is—to name a few—the Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah or Mizrachi, each of which plays a constructive role - today." Katz pointed out that "in view of the tremendous challenges that face the Jewish people in _many spheres, these organizations have a meaning and a reason for their continued existence." He added that "perhaps what is called for is a re-examina- tion and reassessment of the prograin and function of the Zionist movement in an ever-changing world. This is a judg- ment of reappraisal- which rests with the Zionist movement itself." (Katz's statement was aimed at Dr. Joachim Prinz, pres- ident of the American Jewish Congress, who, in an address at the meeting of the national governing council of his organi- zation, Sunday, in Philadelphia, called for the dissolution of the Zionist movement and its merger into a world body dedicated to the unity of the Jewish people. The theme of Dr. Prinz's address was "Zionism is dead—long live the Jewish people ! " Dr. Prinz's statement also was condemned Monday evening by Philip Slomovitz, in his report on the World Zionist Congress, at a meeting of the Zionist Council and Jewish *Com- munity Council of Detroit, at the Jewish Center.) - Probe Synagogue Bombing in Chicago, Johannesburg Text of Dr. Nelson Glueck's Bene- diction at. Today's Inauguration on Page 2. of This. Issue. (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) Bombings of synagogues in cities as widely separated as Chicago and Joharinesberg, South Africa, have aroused appre- hension as to whether another rash - of anti-Semitic actions, paralleling the swastika smearings of late 1959 and early 1960, is breaking out. The evidence however, is as yet too scattered for definite conclusions. In Chicago the Federal Bureau of Investigation joined local police in a full-scale hunt for vandals who planted a bomb which exploded in the Anshe Emet synagogue, the largest Conservative synagogue in the city. The bomb went off just before midnight about 90 Minutes after participants in a meeting in the basement had left. The blast ripped a hole in the ground, smashed open two doors and cracked walls. Damage was estimated at about $2,000. Hundreds of windows in surrounding houses were shattered. Mayor Daley - called the bombing a "shocking thing to occur in our city." James H. Gale, head of the FBI Chicago office, said his agents Would seek evidence of violation of Federal law, such as transportation of the explosives on a common carrier. The penalty for unlawkl interstate transportation of explosives is one year's imprisontnent and up to $1,000 fine or both. If personal injury is'inflVtbd b6mbing, sentenced to as much a$.,.10 years and fines up to 110500 or given both penalties. The vandals, if they are apprehended, will also face action under a new Chicago - regulation which imposes stiff penalties for desecration of houses of worship. The regulation was passed by the City Council last January after swastikas appeared on Chicago synagogues. The dynamiting of the main synagogue of Johannesburg, South Africa, was the fourth bombing of a religious building in the city in three days. There were no injuries, but the synagogue's office was thoroughly wrecked, and the house of worship badly damaged. The incident followed damage during robbery attempts at a Methodist church and a Dutch Reformed church here. There was no evidence of robbery at the syna- gogue. Church leaders in Johannesburg expressed their con- demnation of the synagogue bombing and extended their sympathy to the Jewish community. Neither synagogue leaders nor the police were prepared to express an opinion on whether the explosion had any anti-Semitic motive or was common vandalism. Dr. Percy Yutar, acting president of the synagogue, termed the bombing "wanton destruction." , Dispatches from Morocco and a number of for- eign capitals report tragic mistreatment of Moroccan Jews in the period since an African "summit con- ference" met in Casablanca, early this month, with the participation of President- Nasser of the United Arab Republic.-The course of events was symbolized by the sinking of the small boat, Price, in which 43 Jews fleeing Morocco were drowned in the high Mediterranean seas. - Reports from Rabat state that Crown Prince Moulay. Hassan, liberal Foreign Minister of Morocco, told a delegation of Jewish leaders who conferred with him that persons responsible for anti-JeWish acts in Iltoroccb would be "severely punished." Pledging that measures would be taken "to restore the situation to normality," with regard to treatment of Moroccan Jews, the Crown Prince told the Jewish leaders that he "regretted" the various anti-Jewish incidents that occurred recently. The Jewish delegation was headed by Meyer Obadia, president of the Moroccan Jewish Commu- nity, and included Grand Rabbi Danan as well as Dr. Leon Benzaquen, formerly a member of the Moroccan Cabinet. The Crown Prince had with him, during the conference, Minister of the Interior Mbarek Bekkai. The Jewish delegation had protested- to the Crown Prince against a number of incidents, which took place particularly during the recent visit to Morocco of United Arab Republic President- Gamal Abdel Nasser. 'Also a few days ago, Casablanca police cordoned off a sector of the city inhabited almost exclusively by Jews, arresting about 100 Jews. Tho'se arrested were released after being detained by the police for about 24 hours. Previous dispatches to Paris had noted that the Crown Prince, known personally for his relatively friendly attitude toward the Jews, had been given a dossier showing Moroccan police maltreatnient of at least 2,000 Jews, who were arrested, some of them being detained and interrogated for as long as 48 hours. The Jewish leaders also complained about the recent rise in kidnapings of young Jewish girls who are abducted by agents for rich. Moslems. Despite repeated complaints, the Jews told the Crown Prince, Jewish girls, some of them only 13 and 14 years old, are being kidnaped, forcibly converted to Moham- medanism, then installed in the harems owned by wealthy Moroccan Moslems. Police authorities have refused to take any action toward tracing the where- abouts of these Jewish girls, the leaders complained. The leaders meeting with the Crown Prince are understood to have avoided mentioning the incident of the ship, the Price, which capsized in the Medi- terranean with the loss of 43 Jewish men, women and children en route from Melilla, Spanish Morocco, to Gibraltar. Of the 22 bodies recovered after that (Continued on Page 3) Related Story on Page 9 Inauguration Open House at.
