Bar-Ilates Progress Brings
Endorsements from Israelis
By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ
TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel's
youngest university is receiving
constantly increasing support
from Israelis.
Bar-Ilan University, at Ramat
Gan, is considered as making
such rapid progress that many
Israelis ; among them important
government leaders, speak of
the school of higher learning as
a very significant asset to Is-
rael's educational system.
In the few years of its exist-
ence, Bar-Ilan has enrolled
many hundreds of students and
has on its faculty noted scien-
tists and scholars in all fields of
endeavor.
late Detroit scholar, already is
functioning at Bar-Ilan. The uni-
versity urgently needs addi-
tional buildings and hope has
been expressed here that a
special structure will be made
available for history teaching
and research, to include the
classes conducted by the Hersh-
man Chair professors.
Israelis are especially
pleased with Bar-Ilan's pro-
gram of conducting night
classes for newcomers. This
undertaking is viewed as a
distinct contribution toward
the integration of new ar-
rivals here who must learn
Hebrew and the customs of
the country.
Dr. Joseph Lookstein, who
came to Israel as a member of
the religious delegation to the
World Zionist Congress from
the U.S., as president of the
board of Bar-Ilan University,
said he was heartened by the
advances made at the univer-
sity, by the cooperation between
students and faculty, and he ex-
pressed the hope that continued
and increasing American sup-
port will give the university an
even stronger foothold in the
coming years.
Dr. Lookstein expressed grati-
tude to Detroit Jewry, and es-
pecially to the Stollman family,
for the deep interest in Bar-
Ilan University and Detroit's
generous gifts towards the
school's activities.
The more than 600 students
now enrolled in Bar-Ilan are
the symbols of this univer-
sity's integrated program of
modern knowledge in all
fields of endeavor and Torah
learning.
Notables from all over the
world were present at the sec-
ond graduation of the univer-
sity two weeks ago.

This year's - dinner is dedi-
cated to the establishment of
the Dr. A. M. Hershman Chair
in Jewish Studies at Bar-Ilan.
The goal is $100,000, according
to Al Borman, who with Abe
Kasle is chairman of the Hersh-
man Memorial Fund.

Israel had not been on the
agenda of the conference, but
the resolution was pushed
through by Gamel Abdel Nasser,
President of the United Arab
Republic. Observers here ex-
pressed the opinion that adoption
of the Nasser resolution was a
slap at Kwame Nkrumah, Presi-
dent of Ghana, and President
Modibo Keita, of Mali, both of
whom have had good relations
with Israel. Other leaders attend-
ing the conference, in addition to
Nasser, Keita and Nkrumah, were
King Mohammed V of Morocco
and President Sekro oure of
Guinea.
