Launch Unique Heart Project

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
A unique study of predictabili-
ty in heart cases was underway
here at the Harold Brunn In-
stitute of Mount Zion Hospital
and Medical Center in coopera-
tion with two other research
laboratories.
The study deals with 4,000
healthy men from a dozen
corporations in the area to de-
termine the key factors which
Are expected to cause some of
the subjects to suffer heart at-
tacks within the next five years.
Research teams from the
three institutions were studying
the 4,000 volunteers, who are
between the ages of 39 and 59.
Each is undergoing a special
series of tests, dealing with
rapidity of blood clotting, the
presence of cholesterol in the
blood, the- nature of the indi-
vidual's personality and expo-

sure to work deadlines and
other stresses.
When all this information is
collected and evaluated, each
team will try to predict which
group of the 4,000 will have
the greatest number of heart
attacks per group during the
next five years. The predictions
will be sent to the Western
Collaborative Study, the forthal
name of the experiment, to be
kept under lock and key until
the end of the five years.
The project is being financed
by the National Institutes of
Health, the American Heart As-
•sociation and the Heart Associ-
ations of surrounding counties.
The goal is to clarify the
pute over which factors' are
causative in heart disease and
the interrelationships of the de-
cisive factors.
