SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)
Facilities for treatment of men-
tal illness in this city, which.has-
a very high rate of such illness,
will be expanded by Mount Zion
Hospital and Medical Center.
The shortage of such fa'cilities
will be eased by the creation of
a new 20-bed psychiatric in-
patient unit in the hospital-cen-
ter, using space vacated through
other changes in the institu-
tion's program. Another step
will be the transfer of the psy-
chiatric out-patient department
from its present crammed .quar-
ters to the second floor of the
new out-patient building.
Dr. Cyrus R. Friedman, chief
of psychiatry, explained that the
in-patient unit will be located in
the main hospital to allow much
greater contact between the *psy-
chiatric and other branches of
treatment at the hospital-center.
It will also stimulate the patient
to feel he is not isolated from
the mainstream of hospital. ac-
tivity.
The existing out-patient clinic
is so short of space that patients
must wait as long as five months
for the start of treatment. Fa-
cilities in the new building will
double the space and mean
greatly expanded service at the
clinic, he said.
Funds for the new facilities
will come from the San Fran-
cisco . Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion's capital funds campaign.

NEW YORK -- The Soviet
Union now has 310,000 scientists,
of whom about 10 percent-30,-
663—are Jews, according to the
USSR's 1960 statistical hand-
book.
The number of Jewish scien-
tists, as well as the number of
scientists in general in Russia,
has risen since the last census in
1955. Five years ago, there were
224,000 scientists in the USSR,
with 24,620 of them identified
as Jews.
Breakdowns of comparisons be-
tween 1955 and 1960 show that
Jewish scientists have increased
in numbers by 25 percent in the
last five years.

tive committee of the Jewish-
Christian Friendship Associa-
tion adopted a resolution del
nouncing the Italian Orbis News
Agency for an anti-Semitic ar-
ticle carried by the agency from
Munich, attacking the handful
of Jews in West Germany as
being "money-sick" and charg-
ing them with "creating around
them an atmosphere of re-
pressed hatred which some day
will explode in a new Hitlerian
era."
The association charged the
news agency with having "iden-
tical inspiration as the recent
initiative of the - international
neo-Nazi and neo-Fascist organi-
zations." The association called
for strong measures by Italian
authorities against ideologies
opposed by an absolute majority
of the Italian people.

Bystanders Douse Fire
Set to Paris Synagogue

PARIS, (JTA)—Anti-Semitic
vandals tried to set fire to the
Rue Payee synagogue by plac-
ing gasoline-soaked newspapers
against a synagogue wall, but
passers-by put out the blaze,
police reported.
Police reported that the van-
dalism attempt was the second

the past two weeks. A police
investigation was underway.
