THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, December 23, 1960 —

Samuel to Open
Midrasha Series
on 'Hassidism'

The influence on Jewish life
and thought of the Hassidic move-
ment will be the theme of the
Midrasha's fifth annual institute
(the Theodore Bargman Memorial
Lecture), to be conducted on four
consecutive Wednesday evenings,
March 8-29 at the Esther Berman
Building, Schaefer. and Seven
Mile Rd.
Mrs. Carl Schiller, • Institute
chairman, announces four out-
standing essayists and scholars
will present papers on aspects of
the Hassidic movement. Maurice
Samuel will open the series with
"The Legacy of Hassidim", March
8.
"Oppositions to the Hassidic
Movement" will be discussed by
Rabbi Israel Kazis, Dr. Abraham
Halkin will delineate the "Hassi-
dic Influences on Jewish Litera-
ture" and Rabbi Louis I. New-
man's topic at the concluding ses-
sion will be devoted to "The Con-
temporary Jew Looks. at Hassi-
dism."
Because of the popularity of the
Institutes and the limited space in
the building, students of previous
programs are urged to register at
the earliest opportunity.
