It is forbidden to enter the
synagogue with military arms.
The Talmud (Sanhedrin 82a),
commenting upon the impul-
sive and heroic act of Phinehas
as described in the Bible, which
says he "took a spear in his
hand" (Numbers 25:7), deduces
the fact that it is otherwise for-
bidden to carry an instrument
of warfare into the sanctuary.
Some commentaries forbid its
presence altogether, while
others permit it if it is not ex-
posed but concealed. The basic
reason offered for this restric-
tion is that the purpose of a
military weapon is contradic-
tory to the purpose of the syna-
gogue.
While the House of Worship
is used to prolong life, the
sword is used to curtail it. For
this reason have the codes for-
bidden entrance into the syna-
gogue to anyone carrying a long
knife (Shulchan Aruch 151:6).
