The general principle ehind sire to this tradition is the "publicize the miracle' which is hanukah commemorated by th Menorah. Originally, hen peo- ple had open doorwa placing 'n the the Chanukah Menora open doorway was a m of having it observed by the pas by. Some contended that the Chanukah Menorah was placed to the left of the doorway so that whoever entered had to pass be- tween the Menorah on his left and the Mezuzah on his right, thus being flanked by religious symbols on both sides. Later when doorways were not left open anymore, or for those who occu- pied upper stories, tradition called for placing the Menorah in the window. Where people live high- er up or away from thoroughfares, so that the windows do not be- come easily noticeable from the street, the tradition calls for plac- ing the Menorah in a location most easily noted by those who dwell in the house. C * * Why do many insist upon lighting oil tapers instead of wax candles? Their desire is to match the original light of the miracle as closely as possible. Since the orig- inal miracle occurred with- a cruse of oil, many insist upon kindling oil Menorahs to remind them- selves of the oil over which the miracle was observed. * is Why do the women of the household refrain from doing any work while the Chanukah, candles are still burning? A number of reasons are- ad- vanced for this practice. Joseph Karo, the author of the Shulhan Aruch, claims that this is done so that the people of the household understand that it is prohib' to make any use of the of the Chanukah Menora other source carried thi rgument further by stating th it is•feared lest the household ahts would go out and the p le in the house would inadv ntly use the Chanukah candle r light, which is' prohibited. Thi ohibi- tion was extended particu to women since they are the who perform work in the house- hold; also, because while they cease work, it is brought to mind that one of the- miraculous events of the Chanukah episode came about through the act of a heroic Jewess.
