Ex-POW Wins Belgian
Major Literature Prize

.

BRUSSELS, (JTA)—The Vic-
tor Rossel prize for literature,
the most important award in
this field in Belgium, was
awarded to Victor Mizrachi for
his novel, "North Roads."
Born in Antwerp, the 47-year-
old author was a prisoner of war
in Germany for five years. He
is employed at the Library of
the University of Brussels.

Demonstrations Staged
Against Soviet Jews

LONDON, (JTA) — Anti-Jew-
ish demonstrations, staged as
"spontaneous proletarian mani-
festations," have been held at
Cernauti, capital of Soviet Bu-
kovina, a city with a large Jew-
ish population which was
formerly a part of Romania, ac-
cording to a Soviet newspaper
received here.
The demonstrations were re-
ported in "Rodiayanskaya Bu-
kovina," published in Cernauti.
The paper said they were staged
by local workers allegedly as a
protest against the "reactionary
Jewish hotbed" centered about
the synagogue in the city. The
newspaper attacked the Cer-
nauti rabbi and leaders of the
Jewish community in the city
for permitting "an Israeli dip-
lomat from MosCow" to attend
Jewish- religious services
Previously, according to the
Free Romanian Press Agency
which reported the incidents
here, an anti-Semitic attack was
disseminated in a pamphlet pub-
lished by the State Publishing
House of the Republic of Mol-
dovia. That region is also former
Rumanian territory, with many
Jews living there. The pamphlet
was entitled: "On the Reaction-
ary and anti-National Character
of the Theoretical Principles
of Judaism."

PARIS—A Jewish member of
the jury of the highly respected

The all-woman jury of top
literary personalities gave the
5,000 franc ($1,000) award by a
vote of 7 to 6 to Louise Bellocq

slightest trace of anti-Semitism
in this book." Asserting she her-
self had almost been deported
and burned alive by the Nazis
she said: "Do you think that I .
could have voted for a book that
was anti-Semitic?"
Mrs. Beck returned to her
charges with the assertion that
the book was anti Semitic—
"not a violent anti-Semitism
but even worse a charitable
anti-Semitism." She added that
it was one of the "worst books"
she had ever read.

Kubovy also reported that by
the end of October the Yad Va-
shem had transmitted to West
German officials a new list con-
taining names of nearly 1,000
Nazi war criminals.
The Council meeting discussed
the problem of teaching the his-
tory of the Nazi holocaust in
Israel schools and the problem
of correct teaching of Jewish
history in other countries, par-
ticularly that dealing with the
Hitler era in non-Jewish schools
and in those of West Germany.
Kubovy reported that two Is-
raeli history teachers had been
invited to West Germany under
UNESCO auspices to revise the
treatment of Jewish history in
German textbooks and to draft
outlines of accurate treatment of
the subject.
