Some congregations have the
curtain outside the Ark, while
others have it both inside as
well as outside the Ark.
There was originally a dif-
ference of opinion between the
medieval commentaries in the
Talmud, as to where this cur-
tain should be placed. Rashi
Was of the opinion that it
should be hung inside the Ark.
The Baale Tosafot maintained
the view that it should be hung
outside the Ark (Megillah 26b).
Some, desiring to fulfill the re-
quirements of both authorita-
tive views hung one curtain
inside the Ark and the other
outside the Ark.
The current practice amongst
Ashkenazic Jewish communities
is to hang the curtain on the
outside of the Ark. Interesting
indeed is the practice of the
Sephardic congregations, which
hang the curta i n inside the
Ark.
It is said that they do this
because circumstances forced
them to conceal the curtain
inside the Ark during the age
of the inquisition in Spain and
Portugal, so that the Ark con-
taining the Torahs would not
be easily identified from the
outside, looking like an ordi-
nary cupboard or closet.
Since this became the prac-
tice under duress, it is claimed
that the Sephardic communities
continued to do this even after
the dangerous years were over.
Some sources claim that the
reason for having a curtain both
on the inside, as well as the
outside, . is that in the Bible
(Numbers 4:5, 6, 7) it appears
that three veils were used.
Thus, some communities use
three covers: one is. the velvet
mantle that is put over each
Sefer Torah, a second is the
curtain placed inside the Ark,
and a third is the curtain placed
outside the Ark.
Man's earliest efforts to ward
off disease were charms and
amulets to counteract "evil spir-
its," according to a doctor at
the University of Michigan Med-
ical Center.
