Ac- cording to tradition, king David is buried on Mount Zion. From it, it is possible to view the ruins of the old city and the site of the Temple which are in non-Jewish hands. Prior to the emergence of the State, it was the custom to visit and pray on Mount Zion on the feast of Shavuot which is the anniversary of King David's death. The Arabs al- lowed isolated individuals only to visit there and that only against pay- ment. In the war of Liberation Mount Zion was conquered and it is the most important holy place out- side the walls of the Old City in Israel hands. Besides the tomb of king David and the adjoining synagogue there is on mount Zion the Cellar of the Holo- caust where are stored urns of the ashes of the martyrs of the extermin- ation camps and parchment leaves of Torah scrolls desecrated by the Nazis. The walls of the cellar are covered with hundreds of tablets in memorial to the Diaspora communities, fixed there b1' survivors of the communi- ties. On the top of the mount is the yeshiva of mount Zion where Mishna is studied in memory of the six mil- lion' martyrs slaughtered by the Nazis. The mount Zion committee attached to the Ministry of Religious Affairs has initiated the project of barmitzva partners: the parents of a barmitzva boy in the Diaspora can inform the management of mount Zion of this and the latter puts him in touch with an Israeli child whose barmitzva is at the same time. Both children receive barmitzva certificates and greeting scrolls from the mount from which, according to tradition, all blessing goes forth. The mount Zion commit- tee has likewise initiated the dispatch of foundation stones from mount Zion to Diaspora synagogues. Every new synagogue being erected orders a foundation stone from mount Zion. During the festival pilgrimage tens of thousands of Pilgrims ascend mount Zion in song and melody, all of them receive ,a certificate and flower from mount Zion. Translation of Hebrew column. Published by Brit Ivrit Olamit. Homer Wickliiie, harpsichord; and Ruth L. Zimmerman, t r e b el vielle, tenor viol. A company of 86, including Irene Jordan, John McCollum, Russell Oberlin, Ara Berberian and Joann Freeman at the harp- sichord, comprise the Little Or- chestra with Thomas Scherman. They will present "Judas Mac- cabaeus" as a- salute to the Amer- ican Jewish community during its observance of Hanukah. Although the tenor aria "Sound ` M accabaeus ' an Alarm" and the exultant march chorus "See the Conquer- ing Hero Comes" have long been staples of the international con- cert repertoire, "Judas Macca- baeus" as a whole has had rela- tively few performances on the American concert stage. Thomas Scherman performed it first in December, .1959 at Car- negie Hall in New York. The original company will present the work at the . Detroit Art Institute auditorium, on Dec. 7.
