F:xecutive (Office —toms C Mnumi Mayor JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER MOTHERS CLUBS DAY - el) November 30, 1960 WHEREAS Under the sponsorship of the Jewish Community Center of Detroit, - four mothers clubs, the Center,Davison Mothers Club, the Dexter Mothers Club, the Fenkell Mothers Club and the Twelfth Street Mothers Club, have been meeting regularly at the Center for social, educational and civic purposes, and WHEREAS The first mothers club was founded in November, 1920, meeting at , the Hannah Schloss building, comprised of young immigrant women who met to learn about the American way of life, studying English, citizenship, civic responsibility, child care, local and national. civic projects and community services, and WHEREAS The mothers clubs over the years have sponsored a nursery at the Center so members could participate in English and citizenship classes; with some members earning golden keys; have sponsored-a mothers and childrens camp in Chelsea, Michigan and have partici- pated in worthwhile activities, by serving as United Service Organ- ization canteen hostesses, by contributing craft articles to the Red Cross; bysewing cancer pads for the Michigan Cancer Society; by serving as aides in hospitals; and many other similar projects, and WHEREAS The mothers clubs, through their steering committee, the Council of Mothers Clubs, are now commemorating their 40th anniversary', and will celebrate this anniversary with a luncheon program on November 30, 1960: - Record Set in 1960 OF 'Fair Share' Giving "Fair Share" giving and all- out participation brought record success to the 1960 Torch Drive. A checking of records at United Foundation headquarters, 1528 Woodward, shows more "Fair Share" givers than ever before and a higher percentage of participation, Walter C. Laid- law, executive vice president of the United Foundation, said. "Fair Share" is a standard of giving according to income that was worked out by a United Foundation committee. The $18,316,741 raised in the 1960 Torch Drive was the great- est amount ever contributed in a- community-wide drive for health and community services. It brought to more than $173,- 000,000 the amount raised by the Torch Drive in the past 12 years. 1 BEFORE, I, Louis C.
