`Mama's Meichulim' Offer Traditional
Jewish Recipes, Guides to .Housewives

From the press of Thomas
Yoseloff, publisher (11 E. 36th,
N. Y. 16), comes a new cook
book — "Mama's Meichulim,"
compiled and edited by Sadie
H. Rivkin.
This latest cook book explains
traditional Jewish cooking, lists
a large number of recipes, offers
advice so that such cooking can
be "made easy" and adheres to
the Jewish codes of kashrut.
The compiler of this cook
book is 71 years old. Born in
Russia, she came to this coun-
try at the age of 8, and while
she interrupted her studies for
a number of years she returned
to school and earned her law
degree after her son was born.
She shared a law practice with
her husband, but gave up her
practice to devote herself to her
home and to raising three chil-
dren.
During World War II she was
a naval base volunteer worker

in Bayonne, N. J., then taught
social work at Hebrew Educa-
tional Alliance in New York
where she also began to give
lessons in traditional Jewish
cooking. Her book is an out-
growth of these classes.
In 1957 she received a certifi-
cate of merit for group leader-
ship from the Jewish Welfare
Board.
In "Mama's Meichulim" Mrs.
Rivkin offers "thoughts about
food," lists "time savers" and
has a- concluding chapter on
"what made mama mama" in
which she indicates the impor-
tance of good food well cooked.
The suggested recipes are for
fish and appetizers, soups, poul-
try, beef, veal, side dishes, chol-
lents and casseroles, stuffings,
cakes and desserts, salads and
relishes, and foods for holidays.
All the holidays on the Jew-
ish calendar are represented.
Of value in this interesting
book is the index, which helps
the housewife find any food
item desired alphabetically.
