Alphonse Halimi, the French-
Jewish lad who fought his way
to the bantamweight champion-
ship and lost it to Jose Becerra
of Mexico, now holds half of the
championship once again.
Becerra knocked out Halimi
to wrest the title from him, and
then KO'd him again to keep it.
Then, last year, Becerra, after a
losing non-title fight, vacated
his crown, which then went up
for grabs. Halimi met Freddy
Gilroy of Great Britain for the
European version of the crown,
before 11,000 fans in London.
It was a rousing fight, which
ended in chaos as Halimi won the
decision which most fans felt
should have gone to Gilroy. It
was good fast fighting, with Gil-
roy being knocked down for a
count of four in the 13th round.
Now Halimi will meet the win-
ner of the NBA championship
bout, probably next year..
The two other contenders are
Eder Jofre of Brazil and Eloy
Sanchez of Mexico.
In any case, Halimi is back
with a partial title and may
have the full crown before long:
He is a crowd pleaser and wins
most of the time. It may be
that Becerra was his nemesis.
Jerusalem 'Boys Town'
to Build Wing Honoring ,
American Labor Leader
NEW YORK, (JTA) - A to7
tal of $50,000 was raised for
Boys Town, Jerusalem, a voca-
tional training school for Is-
raeli immigrant youth, at a din-
ner in honor of Jacob Wellner,
president of the Brooklyn Paint-
ers Joint Executive Council,
AFL-CIO, it was announced by
Ira Guilden, president of the
American Committee for Bbys
Town.
The school is now building a •
central campus in Jerusalem to
house all its scattered facilities
which serve some 500 students.
A wing to be built at a cost of
$100,000, will be. named for
Wellner in tribute to his ef-
forts and those of the union on
behalf of the school, Guilden
said.
