Mrs. Charles Hymes of Minne-
apolis, national president of the
National Council of Jewish
Women, is in Detroit this week
end, attending the General As-
sembly of Jewish Federations
and Welfare Funds.
The National Council will be
honored at the Assembly ban-
quet Saturday evening at the
Statler Hilton Hotel when Mrs.
Hymes will be presented the
William J. S'hroder Memorial
Award. In Detroit' with Mrs.
Hymes for this occasion are all
the national vice-presidents.
The citation reads in part,
"The . . . program of the Na-

a variety of community activ-
ities. The Award Committee
was greatly impressed with the
pioneering job which this rep-
resents."
According to Mrs. Hymes, the
award has been granted on the
basis of the integrated aspect
of the NCJW service program
with social action, the pioneer-
ing and demonstration aspect of
community services and public
affairs programs, training and
supervision of volunteers, rela-
tion between professional and
volunteer and selection and ex-
ecution of projects in terms of
needs of - the total community.
The Shroder award was estab-
lished in 1953 by the Council of
Jewish Federations and Wel-
fare Funds as a tribute to Wil-
liam J. Shroder of Cincinnati,
founder and first president of
the Council, for the purpose of
giv,ing force year after year to
the humanitarian purpose which
he personified.
In line with the spirit of the
award, the Detroit Section has
long operated many community
projects to fill local needs.
Starting as "Operation
Friendship," Council recently
began a new pilot project for a
group of out-patients of the
Ypsilanti State Hospital. The
Monday Club, as it is - now
called, meets weekly at Council
House, under the professional
guidance of Charles Wolfson.
Trained council volunteers
offer recreation, games, crafts
and friendship to these Veople.
So successful is the project that
a Friday Club has already be
organized. University of
igan considers the caliber o
program so excellent that
sent a graduate student
his field work under the
vision of Wolfson.
