UN's Diplomatic Circles 'Shocked'
by USSR's Revival of Blood Libel

UNITED NATIONS (JTA).
The Communist party in Russia has revived
the anti-Semitic "blood libel" of the Middle Ages in an effort to destroy the last
refuge of 11,000 "mountain Jews" in the Soviet Caucasus, the New York Herald
Tribune reported.
Bearing a United Nations dateline and attributed to "evidence received
here" Nov. 3, the Herald Tribune report said that the anti-Semitic campaign,
which had been spreading through the Soviet Union, had reached Buinaksk, the
third largest city, in the Soviet Republic of Daghestan, which is bordered on the
east by the Caspian Sea. The immediate target of the campaign, the dispatch
asserted, was to force the closing of the only synagogue in Buinaksk, the religious
and -social center of the Jewish community.
According to the dispatch, "Kommunist," the official • organ of the Buin-
aksk Communist Party, published an article on Aug. 9, accusing the Jews in the
area of drinking the blood of Moslems in the fulfilment of their religious rites.
The dispatch cited experts on the subject as saying that this was the first time that
the "blood libel" had been used by the Soviet Union or any other country. Revival
of the libel has alarmed the Jews of the Caucasus and other parts of the Soviet
Union.

The dispatch declared that only the intervention of Soviet Premier Khrush-
chev could prevent the current campaign from leading to an outbreak of violence
against Buinaksk Jews, who belong to a central Asian nationality known as Tats.
The newspaper reproduced a copy of the Aug. 9 article and cited the fol-
lowing excerpts from it:
"Speaking about their own religion, Jews assert 'our religion is the true
religion; we shall 'enter Paradise; the Moslem religion is false, therefore they (the
Moslems) will go to Hell.' The Jews do such uncouth things. For example, a Jew
who does not drink the blood of the Moslems -at least once a year is 'not consid-
ered a true believer. Consequently, many Jews buy five to ten grams of blood
from Moslems, add to it a barrel of water and sell it as 'water with Moslem
blood.' "
Another citation read: "According to the Jewish religion, a Jew may eat
Only the meat of an animal which has been killed by his rabbi. All other cus,
toms of the Jewish religion equally contradict Moslem practices. Moslems are
hostile to Jews because Jews in the past have been hostile to Moslems."
United Nations diplomatic circles expressed themselves as "shocked" and
"dismayed" by the revelations. A copy of the Buinaksk "Kommunist" was viewed
here by Western and other diplomats who immediately had the text translated
from the bi-lingual publication which is printed in both Russian and Kumyk, the
