CO co a) CD" Pc, Senator Jacob K. Javits to Speak Monday for Nixon, Lodge Ticket United States Senator Jacob K. Javits (R., N.Y.) will address a public meeting, arranged by the Committee of Friends for Nixon and Lodge, at the Jewish Community Center, Curtis and Meyers, 8:30 p.m. Monday. Co-chairmen of the committee arranging the meeting, which will be open to the public, are Max M. Fisher, Phillip Stollman, ti) z cf) ti O E-1 SEN. JACOB K. JAVITS Benjamin Burdick, Jason Honig- man and Irwin Burdick. Benjamin Burdick, member of the board of governors of Wayne State University, will be the chairman. Javits voted to retain strong con- trols. Democrats often said they could always count on him for an extra vote on many crucial issues. Javits took pains to list himself as a "Republican-liberal. By 1948 Javits' popularity was great enough for him to defeat Paul O'Dwyer, the ex-mayor's brother. O'Dwyer, with strong backing, had attempted to win Javits' district. Javits' mother was born in Palestine. This might partly ex- plain his vital interest in Israel. Immediately after his election to Congress, he went to Palestine, at his own expense, to study conditions there. As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Ja- vits argued against members of both political parties at times when he thought they were mis- taken on issues involving Israel. His protests to the State Depart- ment were sharp and frequent. At the recent San Francisco Re- publican Convention, he led the fight before the G.O.P. platform committee in a vain attempt to secure a pledge of U. S. arms sales to Israel. Javits was married in 1947 to Marion Ann Borris of Detroit. They have three children. Javits finds time to serve as a trustee of the Jewish Hospital and as an overseer of the Jewish Theologi- cal Seminary.
