Facing East in Prayer
It is traditionally required
to face east during prayers. The
rabbis intended that all the
people of Israel should face one
central point when they pray.
The Talmud states (Berakot
30a) that those who pray out-
side the land of Israel should
direct their attention towards
Israel_ Those who pray inside
Israel should direct their atten-
tion towards Jerusalem. Those
who pray in Jerusalem should
direct their attention toward
the Site of the Holy Temple.
Those who pray in the Holy
Temple should direct their at-
tention towards the "Holy of
Holies." Others have said that
facing the east is a sign of
optimism since the east is the
location of the rising sun.
Israel Phone Service
Gives Times of Sabbath
It is reported from Jerusalem
that residents of that city, Tel
Aviv and Haifa now enjoy an ad-
ditional telephone service which
furnishes daily times of the begin-
ning and end of Sabbaths and
festivals by simply dialing "10."
Introduced by B. Mintz, the Poale
Aguda Minister of Posts; there is
no charge for the service.
Last year 26 county and re-
gional libraries in Michigan cir-
culated 8,936,000 books.
