United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who has in the past spoken out against Jordan and against Israel's demand for a summit meeting between him and Israel Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, has stepped up his double-barreled attacks against the two countries since his return from recent attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. It was at that Assembly session that Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel's Foreign Minister, reiterated Israel's request for im mediate peace negotiations with the UAR and with any or all hostile Arab governments, "without any pre-conditions." Political observers here recalled Tuesday that, in the past year, Israel has also warned that it could not remain passive if foreign intervention were to change the status quo in Jordan. General Kassem issued his warning_ after Nasser again brought Jordan into his speeches, which he has been making at various large gatherings in Syria in the last few days. In these speeches, he also rejected Israel's demand fcir a summit conference as "a proposal aimed only at deceiving world opinion." Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News ROME—The 102-member United Jewish Appeal mission—which in eludes 15 Detreiters—paid tribute to Pope John XXIII Monday at a Papal audience marked by a complete absence of stiffness or formality. The Pope greeted members of the delegation - with warmth and apolo- gized for being unable to shake hands with all members of the group, which visited Rome under auspices of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. They are on a fact-finding survey of conditions in Europe and Israel in connection with the UJA campaign for 1961. The group left for Israel after the 'Rome visit. The Pope shook hands with Rabbi Herbert Friedman, executive vice- chairman of the UJA, Benjamin Swig of San Francisco and Adolf Keisler of Denver. The greetings to the Pope were read by Rabbi Friedman from a hand- inscribed scroll which Swig presented to the Pope. The greetings declared "This group of American Jews, all United Jewish Appeal workers, come before you as individuals representing many viewpoints of the American scene. Each of us has long been engaged in the work of saving refugee lives and rebuilding Israel through the UJA, a purely humanitarian organi- zation drawing support not only from the vast majority of American Jews but also from great numbers- of Americans of every faith. "We come as well to renew our appreciation to the Holy See for the outstanding role which church members had, particularly in France and Italy, in saving many Jewish lives, especially those of children in the days of the Hitler terror and World War II." • The greetings cited the work • of the Pope when, as the Vatican repre- sentative, he worked "to rescue European Jewish victims of Hitler's barbarity." The Pope replied in Italian, speaking for 15 minutes. He said that he felt like Joseph when the brothers came and addressed him as strangers and finally Joseph could no longer restrain himself and said "I am your Mrs. Meir Replies to Arab Caluninie; Reiterates Israel's Peace Challenge leo • Editorials Page 4 UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. (JTA)—Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir Monday thrust back at a series of anti-Israeli attacks made here by Arab leaders in the last month before the General Assembly. Exercising her right of reply, she told the Assembly, in a fighting speech, that ,"the time is overdue for this organization to remind the Arab states of their basic obligations." In tones of biting irony, Mrs. Meir apologized to the Assembly for having to take up its time to reply to the Arab attacks. "We should have, of course, known from past experience that nothing angers the representatives of Arab States more than a call for peace," she exclaimed. "But we promise faithfully not to give up this call until there is peace in the Middle East. We know it will come, it must come, and we are convinced that it is for the good of all concerned that it should' come soon. The sooner the better." Mrs. Meir accused the Arab spokesmen in the General Assembly of having produced "a series of most fantastic accusations that distort both the ancient and the modern history of our area and our people" because their position in refusing to 'negotiate with Israel was untenable. She then took up the Arab accusations against Israel one-by-one and replied to them. Mrs. Meir first turned her attention to charges of vnazism" . leyeled against Israel by the . . Saudi Arabian and Lebanese delegates List week. She replied. by asking them what their attitude had been towards Haj Amin el-Hussein, one-time Mufti of Jerusalem, when le went to ciertnaw .during World War II and worked with 'Hitler. She reminded the 'Assembly of Hitler's 4acial pow cies, particularly that "Negroes were not even to be considered human," and asked: "These Arab representatives who now appear here as crusaders_ for the equality of all peopleS, what did they have to say about this racial dOctrine at that time?" In reply to Arab complaints that Israel had refused to obey United Nations resolutions, she commented: "But what was the answer of the Arab League to the United Nations resolu- tion of 1947? They not only rejected it, but they went to war to defeat it." This "historical error" of the Arab intervention in Palestine, she pointed out, "left behind it a bitter legacy, including the creation of the 'Arab refugee problem." The Arab States themselves, she declared, quoting Arab. sources, were responsible for the flight of the . Arab population. To the accusations of "expansionist aims," Mrs. Meir replied briefly, demolishing the "fairy Continued on Page 3 (Continued on Page 3) Jordanians Kidnap, Insult Henry Cabot Lodge's Niece and Friend, Ulpan Students Direct JETA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News TEL AVIV—Dolores Anne Baker, who was kid- naped with a friend on Oct. 1 by Jordanians and held for ten days, was identified Tuesday as a niece of Henry Cabot Lodge, the Republican candidate for the Vice- Presidency.
