Against Arab behind-the-scenes opposition, Shabtai Rosenne,
legal advisor of the Israel Foreign Ministry, was elected vice-
chairman of the General Assembly's legal committee. When Israel
stood firm, Arab delegates avoided a floor fight over the post.
. . . At a dinner given by Golda Meir, Israel Foreign Minister,
twenty representatives of African nations were guests. . . . Mrs.
Meir was a guest of Soviet Premier Khrushchev at a reception
given by him for heads of Assembly delegations.

WASHINGTON—Disorderly conduct charges against five
anti-Nazi hecklers arrested at a July 3 rally of George Lincoln

evening. Entitled "Challenge," the program will allow discus-
sion of such issues as the morality of spying, capital punishment,
women's responsibilities and privileges, and separation of church
and state, as well as the answering of questions from viewers.
The station and participants have promised that the series will
"pull no punches" in its format.

TEL AVIV—Celebrating his 74th birthday, Prime Minister
David Ben-Gurion received a number of distinguished guests,
including U.S. Ambassador Ogden Reid, who wished to extend
greetings ... New records in capital growth have been recorded
by AMPAL, the Israel-American investment firm, during the
past six months. During the next three to five years the company
plans to invest $15,000,000 in Israel, partly for Tel Aviv munici-
pal programs and a construction firm to build rental apartments.

Europe

GENEVA—To compensate refugees persecuted by the Nazis
because of nationality, West Germany will spend $23,800,000.
Hitherto Germany has compensated only those persecuted for
racial or political reasons.
BONN—Heading a delegation of the Association of Rumanian
Jews in Israel, Yitzhak Korn of Israel's parliament has asked
a special commission of the West German parliament to recog-
nize a claim of some $70,000,000 by former Rumanian Jews who
suffered from Nazi persecutiton . . . Restoration of an old syna-
gogue in Germany and a Jewish cemetery in France, in which
about 500 German-Jewish deportees were buried during the
Nazi regime, is under way. Several German towns are paying
for the cemetery work, while the synagogue costs are being
borne by the Baden-Wurttemberg Historical Society of Christians
and Jews.
PARIS—Nazi documents dealing mainly with the Jews and
bearing the signatures of leading Hitler officials in the cam-
paign to exterminate Jews have been unearthed in an old safe
in West Berlin, according to reports received here.
