Israel Bond Sales Reach Total of
$365,000 During High Holy Days

On the basis of incomplete re-
turns from 22 of 26 participating
congregations during Rosh Ha-
shanah and Yom Kippur services,
more than $365,000 in Israel
Bonds were pledged as against a
total of $300,000 last year, it was
reported by Philip Stollman, High
Holy Day Bond chairman, and
Norman Allen and Judge Nathan
J. Kaufman, co-chairmen.
On the basis of the incomplete
returns, this year's total already
represents an increase of more
than 20 per cent over the 1959
total, they said. Yom Kippur
Israel Bond appeals amounted to
more than $315,000. During Rosh
Hashanah services, Israel Bond
appeals totalled $50,800.
Outstanding among Yom Kippur
efforts was that of Adas Shalom,
where Rabbi Jacob E. Segal made
the appeal for the fourth con-
secutive year. His congregation
pledged $180,000, a sizable
increase over the $154,000
pledged in 1959, and one of the
largest totals in the country.
Working to assure the Adas
Shalom total were Congregation
President Max Goldsmith, David
Safran, Detroit Bond chairman
who also addressed the congrega-
tion; Norman Allen, congregation

Ex-German General
At U.S. Base Defames
Victims of Dachau

BONN, (JTA) — The West
German government launched an
inquiry into the comments made
amed former German
by
to Lord Russell of Liver-
.1:
at the Dachau concentration
camp site.
Lord Russell reported that the
former general argued that the
Dachau gas ovens were built by
German prisoners after the war
and that a gas chamber was ac-
tually a shower bath.
Dr. Carstens, secretary of state
in the Foreign Ministry, said in
the West German lower house
that the government was study-
ing the possibility of legal action
against the former general. Pos-
sible charges include slander and
defamation and calumniation of
the memory of the dead.
The former officer is now em-
ployed at the United States mili-
tary camp in Dachau. Dr. Car-
stens emphasized that West Ger-
man authorities are not respon-
sible for the employment of
civilian personnel by the United
States. He added that West Ger-
man missions abroad have made
efforts to present the "true atti-
tude" of the German people on
these questions.
